Dave Eggers’ The Circle, a satirical novel about how a dominating Google-esque tech corporation erodes humanity’s concept of personal privacy, is getting a star-studded movie adaptation. Emma Watson is set to play the lead role of a new employee at the titular Circle, according to Variety and Deadline. Tom Hanks will star across her in an unknown role, and is also producing.

Amazon follows Netflix into the movie business with Elvis & Nixon

Netflix has steadily been edging from making its own TV shows to its own movies, and now Amazon Studios is jumping into the ring with a new project starring Kevin Spacey. Variety reports that the company is finalizing a deal to pick up Elvis & Nixon, Liza Johnson’s film that features Spacey as the titular president, and Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Man of Steel) as the sideburned singer. The two icons met somewhat infamously at the White House in 1970.

Rather than angering theater owners by trying to release the film online at the same time it hits theaters, Amazon will reportedly be holding back, partnering with New York-based distribution company Bleecker Street to release the film theatrically before it comes to Amazon. It’s a…

Pushkin Press Opens Pop-up Shop in New Cinema

London’s Pushkin Press has become one of the founding partners of Picturehouse Central cinema and will have a pop-up shop in the theater to sell books.

Independent publisher Pushkin Press, known for publishing some of the twentieth century’s most widely acclaimed authors (Stefan Zweig, Paul Morand and Yashui Inoue to name a few) as well as award-winning contemporary writers (including Edith Pearlman and Andres Neuman) has become one of the founding partners of London’s Picturehouse Central cinema, and will have a pop-up shop in the theater, selling books along with the usual cinematic treats.

The Bookseller reported that the shop will display books from the Pushkin Collection, “including titles by Stefan Zweig, many of which have been filmed multiple times and inspired Wes Anderson’s Oscar-winning “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Publisher and m.d. of Pushkin Press, Adam Freudenheim, told The Bookseller that, “I’m thrilled for Pushkin to be a key part of the new, flagship Picturehouse Central. So many great films have been inspired by books that it’s fitting for books to have a central place at this exciting new cinema.”

Noting that the six-week shop would be a trial period for both Pushkin and the theater, he added, “If it’s a roaring success it could go longer. It’s an experiment, and we’re both very excited about it.

Clare Binns, director of programming and acquisitions at Picturehouse, told the paper that Pushkin’s “dedication to idiosyncratic publications and their beautifully designed books” were “a natural fit with the spirit of the new cinema, which has at its heart a passion for the indie sensibility, a respect for the old but also a love of the innovative and the new in arts production.”

Museum bookstores have become a proven source of income for publishers. Can movie bookstores be far behind?

Christopher Lee, the British actor known for his many film roles including Count Dracula in numerous movies and Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings, has died at the age of 93 reports The Telegraph. Sundance favorite Dope has a lot going for it. It has the likes of Forest Whitaker and Pharrell Williams backing it. It has A$ AP Rocky and Zoe Kravitz in the cast. And, so unlike most other summer blockbusters, it stars a punk rock-loving black nerd (Shameik Moore) just trying to make it in Compton. Now the film has its own music video. In “Don’t Get Deleted,” movie band Awreeoh (get it? Oreo?) manages to do what should be unthinkable: with the help of that guy from Workaholics, they actually turn social media off to get the teens in their neighborhood to come see their show. Is this Pharrell’s idea of the next unplugging movement? Dope hits theaters on June 19th.

Last Tuesday night in an LA movie theater, Cameron Crowe grabbed a microphone before a crowd of journalists and film critics. There were hollers and applause — a career like his warrants that — and he went on to explain that a couple of years ago he got together with some friends to shoot what he described as a love letter to the island of Hawaii. Sure, there had been some bad buzz, including some particularly damning leaked emails from Sony Pictures executives along the way, but “never did the movie cease to be anything more than a love letter.”

He might as well have just said, Keep your expectations low on this one. A landslide of horrible reviews and a sixth-place, $ 10 million opening weekend later, Crowe’s new film Aloha is dead…

Much has been made of the incredible practical stunts used in Mad Max: Fury Road, but the final product that hit movie screens is the result of combing those stunning special effects with some deft visual effects. Now, thanks to Fxguide, we can see just where the reality ends and the CGI begins. The site has obtained original before and after shots from Warner Bros. that show how the visual effects worked in conjunction with all of the real-life stunts shot for the movie.

As you can see, the CGI work primarily served to enhance what was shot on camera — extra vehicles and people are composited in to the sides of some shots, while other CGI work adds depth to the frame in other scenes. And since much of the film was shot in the flat…
