Effective January 1, 2016, the deal puts Simon & Schuster in charge of distributing all of Gallup’s English-language print and ebooks around the world, as well as translated titles in certain markets.
The agreement covers both front- and back-list titles. In an announcement of the deal today Simon & Schuster characterizes Gallup Press’s back-list, which stands at some thirty titles to date, as a “highly selective list” that offers “tremendous opportunities” for global growth.

The other day I was in the bookstore browsing through some shelves of new releases. I always find it amazing at all of the books that I will never have time to read. One of the ways that I handle this growing frustration is by listening to audio books on cd. This permits me to listen to great authors while I exercise or handle other tasks around the home. I consider this form of media to be a godsend for all book lovers.
I love to read. However to successfully focus my attention on the written word I need to find a quiet place where I can remain free of distractions for several hours. In todays hustle and bustle world that is no easy feat. I try to read for about 45 minutes each day. The problem with this is that it will take more than a month to read through a typical book. With audio books on cd I can listen during what would be considered time dedicated to other ventures.
Have you ever done an inventory of what you spend your time on every day? Every night a create a to-do list for the following day. This list includes all of the activities that I want to accomplish the following day. I try to prioritize them as much as possible. What is interesting to me about this list is that usually about 40% of the activities on this list allow me to listen to a great audio book on cd.
I listen to my audio books on cd while driving my car, while walking my dogs, while exercising and while doings errands around the house. While I could only squeeze out forty five minutes a day to sit down and read a section of a book I can easily spend up to two hours a day listening to great authors present fascinating plots, stories and ideas. All it takes is the realization that a great deal of your time can be used to do more than one thing and that listening to a great book will not be a distraction in that activity.
Today there are thousands of titles that are available as audio books on cd. Whether you are interested in classical literature or current best sellers or anything in between all of these titles are available as an audiobook that can be listened to. I have introduced this media to my family and friends through great storytellers who have enriched their lives. I highly recommend audio books on cd if you are interested in enriching your life as well.

Penguin Comes to Germany

At the end of March, Penguin Random House Germany announced the formation of a new imprint: Penguin Verlag. Led by Thomas Rathnow, publisher and one of the managing directors of Random House Germany, this new press will publish both fiction and non-fiction with the focus on original editions and German-language first editions, as well as paperback editions of titles previously published in other Random House imprints including C. Bertelsmann, DVA, Siedler and others. One of the first titles will be the paperback edition of Swedish author Jonas Jonasson’s second bestseller, The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden.
Rathnow has been working for Random House since 2004, and he became a member of the managing board in 2014. He is responsible for several of Random House’s imprints, such as carl’s books, C. Bertelsmann, Prestel, Knaus, the audio departments Der Hörverlag and Random House Audio.
Even though Random House Germany was not part of the merger between Penguin and Random House last year and doesn’t belong to the recently formed Penguin Random House, it still worked together closely with the international colleagues to bring Penguin Verlag to Germany. Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House and member of the board for Bertelsmann, said: “I am thrilled that our merger of Penguin Random House enables us to bring the renowned Penguin brand to Germany. Our colleagues in Munich will create an outstanding publishing program with the Penguin editorial standards.”

Have you ever heard drones up close? They’re loud. Really loud. Up close, the iconic DJI Phantom measures something like 82 decibels. That’s about as loud as an electric drill with all the warmth of swarming bees. Most drones don’t record audio because the drone (|drōn| noun: a low continuous humming sound) would be unbearable. The noise diminishes as the quartet of spinning motors and props lift the vehicle higher, but the sound remains a nuisance especially when flown above otherwise serene natural wonders accessible only by foot.

Goodreads Adds 180,000 Free Audiobook Samples

Those samples will be available to all Goodreads users whether or not they are Audible customers, but the new feature comes with an offer of a 30-day free trial of Audible, which, like Goodreads, is owned by Amazon.
The streaming feature will be available to users on the Goodreads website, with plans to extend it to the mobile site and apps shortly, according to an announcement today.
The move is push to help ebook readers discover audiobook content and comes at a time when publishers and retailers are experimenting with ways to encourage crossover usage of the two formats. Last week Penguin Random House added more than 9,000 digital audiobook titles to Scribd’s subscription-access content catalog.

Put some headphones on. THX just released an all-new, “rejuvenated” version of its signature Deep Note sound that plays before films at THX-certified movie theaters. It also runs before the main feature on some Blu-rays and DVDs. The new Deep Note doesn’t sound drastically different from the old one — but that wasn’t the goal. Instead, Dr. James “Andy” Moorer, who first composed the sound in 1982 during his time as a sound engineer at Lucasfilm, sought to remake it using modern audio technologies that allow Deep Note to be optimized for 7.1 and Dolby Atmos audio presentations; the previous version has been remastered throughout the years, but still topped out at 5.1 surround.
