Outsourcing Accounting Services in Singapore

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

If you are a company located at, or looking to be located at a premium business hub like Singapore, Accounting forms a major and very important part of your operations. In a country like Singapore, which has a reputation for a clean business environment, accounting procedures are streamlined and demand conformity from all companies with regard to the various taxation structures, etc.

Why Outsource Accounting?

Old world companies may still hold the belief that the accounting should be handled by their ‘own men’, but in today’s modern world and its own pressures and shortages of manpower, it is beneficial for any company to concentrate on its core strengths and leave such processes to experts who know the system inside out. Specially in a scenario where a company is set up newly in Singapore, a Singapore Accountancy Services company who would have a Certified Public Accountant Singapore on board, would be hugely beneficial in not only taking care of mandatory systems of accounting in Singapore, but also use their local knowledge to benefit the company on local taxation and Accounting Bookkeeping Services.

Advantages of Outsourcing

It is quite tough in today’s scenario to be able to hold human resource. This is the reason why it benefits companies to concentrate on their main activities and leave such specialized services to Outsourced agencies. Services like Accounting Bookkeeping Services are not only tedious to be done in-house, but also need in-depth knowledge of the local systems. A Singapore Accounting Services company is better placed to manage the resources required for such jobs.

Local taxation structures, like Corporate Income Tax, Goods and Service Tax, Filing of Annual Returns, etc, bear many intricacies which are better dealt by a Certified Public Accountant Singapore whose services are available through the Singapore Accounting Services companies who can be hired for outsourcing. There are many such certified and accredited accounting services company who can definitely benefit your company in optimizing profits and streamlining the accountancy process in your company. Outsourcing to such a company would enable you to divert more resources on the main Business processes in your company and increase productivity.

Russians Who Read Still Prefer Print Over Ebooks

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

A new survey showed that Russian readers preferred printed books over eBooks by 49% to 9%, though 37% surveyed said “that they do not read books at all.”

By Dennis Abrams

At Russia Beyond the Headlines, Marina Obrazkova looked at current trends in Russian reading culture.

It turns out that printed books are still the most popular format, but e-book use is growing. In addition, fewer people are going to libraries, which, like libraries everywhere are “diversifying their services to gain new subscribers and maintain a healthy volume of readers.”

A survey conducted this year by the Public Opinion Foundation found that Russian readers preferred printed books over eBooks by 49% to 9%. These numbers though, come from those who read at least once a month; and, sadly, 37% of those surveyed said “that they do not read books at all.”

Obrazkova spoke to Anna Yudina, a 29-year-old avid reader and book purchaser, who, like so many readers around the world, doesn’t have nearly enough space to store them all. “I really love going to bookstores or just rummaging through bookstands on the streets. I guess it’s the best way to relax. I then have to take them to my grandmother’s because my rented apartment is too small to keep them.”

She went on to note that despite her love for the printed page, she is downloading more and more ebooks not only because of issues of space, but to make it easier to take them on business trips.

Enterprise Search Overview

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Enterprise. The very word conjures images of super powered businesses churning out products by the second while a sophisticated computer system simultaneously transmits and processes millions of bytes of information at a time creating one awe-inspiring spectacle of industrial prowess – that’s quite an impression from a single word. But what really lurks behind the scenes of these industrial heavy hitters? With so many different facets of a single company it might be expected that it would be very easy for important bits of information to slip between the cracks. Truth be told only a few years ago this practice was not uncommon. Vital data and documents from file systems, document management systems, emails, and databases were many times lost in transmission, saved in incorrect locations, renamed or just plain lost. As one might imagine, this caused countless problems when it came to recovering files and data for various reasons at later dates. Today, this is no longer as much of a problem. No, the solution does not come from hiring more intelligent or capable employees but from a type of information access software known as Enterprise Search.

So what is enterprise search and how does it work? It may be slightly more complex than one would care to wrap his or her brain around at the current moment but a definition from Webopedia conveys it as:

Enterprise search is an extensive search system that provides the means to search both structured and unstructured data sources with a single query. It addresses businesses that need to store, retrieve and track digital information of all kinds. Data sources in enterprise search systems include information stored in many different containers such as e-mail servers, desktops, messaging, enterprise application databases, content management systems, file systems, intranet sites and external Web sites. Enterprise search systems provide users with fast query times and search results that are usually ranked in such a way that the information you need is easily accessible.
-Webopedia

Complicated stuff? Actually, it’s simpler in use than it is in theory. Basically, what all of this is saying is that a single member of a company, given the necessary administrative authority, can do a basic search of all these company components and have results “tout de suite.” This renders the old style sift and sort virtually obsolete. The enterprise search can locate data with such precision and ease that what used to take a group of 5 executives 3 days to hunt down now might take a single cubicle employee a matter of minutes. This is extremely important in the corporate world where every minute at work can potentially make a fortune or lose millions. While the benefits of having a search platform like this at your finger tips might be self prevalent- the drawbacks are not. In fact, they are few and far between.

One major concern when the enterprise search systems were first being implemented was the ability of so many employees to access nearly all of a billion dollar company’s data and documents. But not to worry, enterprise search software comes fully equipped with secure search precautions often providing multiple levels of authorization to ensure that only approved employees have access to confidential files. A very common type of security is known as the Access Control List (ACL) which operates on a document based level by acknowledging which employees have access to which documents. Another common, yet more complex type of security system, is known as subdocument security which allows some users to have a partial view of specific documents whereas other may have access to the entire file.

As sophisticated as the enterprise search may seem, its use is not limited merely to Fortune 500 companies. In recent years, legal issues have spawned a huge spike in the adoption of enterprise search as the Federal Rules for Civil Procedure now require that all companies are able to produce electronic records for subpoenas and inspections. Even many small to mid-sized businesses have incorporated the use of enterprise search systems because the smaller the company the more precious an individual’s time may be.

When investigating enterprise search software, it is important to remember the total benefits that will be reaped from it. The cost of an enterprise search platform that will perform up to the standards a company needs will pay for itself down the road. What is the value of a solid enterprise search platform?

Out now: IOM TT, a gorgeous documentary on the world"s most dangerous motorcycle race

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is at once the strangest, the most beautiful, and the most wickedly dangerous motorcycle race on the planet. It takes lives almost every year; hundreds of racers have died since its inception in 1907.

Studio Kippenberger’s IOM TT documentary seeks to capture all those facets of the race in a 20-minute video featuring interviews with competitors past and present, wicked race footage, and soaring shots from above the Isle’s 37.7-mile course. It definitely doesn’t look like it was cheap to make, which helps explain why it’s not free: you’ll pay $ 4.99 to buy it on Vimeo’s on-demand streaming service. It’s available now.

I’ve had a chance to watch IOM TT, and I’ll say this: if the idea of slow-motion footage…

Video Conferencing

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Video conferencing can be used by many different businesses and organisations in order to improve communication between colleagues as well as between the business and their customers or suppliers. As well as being many different applications of video conferencing, which can also prove beneficial for businesses that operate mostly online as well as for schools and e-learning facilities, there are numerous advantages for anybody that requires improved communications in this way.

Improving Communication

The greatest benefit of video conferencing is that it brings people together and improves communication. Many companies rely on remote workers while more and more businesses have turned towards outsourcing a lot of their business processes. Combining all of these efforts into a single, cohesive unit can prove very difficult but with video conferencing it is possible to enjoy full communications.

Video Calling Versus Video Conferencing

A typical video conferencing setup will require the use of both hardware and software. Video conferencing is different to video calling. While the latter is aimed at conversations between two people, video conferencing is geared towards larger groups of people and may be used by several people in various different locations.

Hardware And Software Requirements

In terms of hardware, companies can use smartboards, display screens, and cameras. Software is usually Internet enabled so that communication can be conducted between anybody with an Internet connection with the appropriate access levels.

Security

Security is an important video conferencing consideration. Video conferencing is usually conducted online and this means ensuring the use of secure URLs while also ensuring that all users remain secure too.

Collaborative Tools

When it comes to collaboration, there are few better tools for improving brainstorming sessions than video conferencing suites. Conferencing can be established on desktops or for entire rooms. The software used can bring together all parties involved in a project so that they can communicate more effectively and efficiently.

Video Conferencing

Communication is critical to the success of businesses and, more specifically, to individual business projects. Video conferencing can also be a beneficial education tool that allows remote students from all over the world to attend lectures and seminars that they would not ordinarily be able to attend.

Video conferencing services from VideoNations.com enable companies and other groups and organisations to improve their communication and collaborative efforts.

Quality Printing

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

People who work in an office or a work place where communication is vital, may it be verbal or written, have to find the best printer cartridges that they could find and other necessary equipment. They should also make it certain that they get compatible cartridges and cheap ink cartridges without sacrificing the quality of the product.

Quality printing is vital when it comes to communication to avoid misunderstanding and other problems in the future. People who are in-charge of the printing have to see to it that their print outs are of high quality and there are no errors whatsoever in the prints that are to be given out. Information dissemination is essential for people to carry on with their tasks and come up with the best results.

Even though we are now in the age of technology, there are still a lot of people and businesses all over the world which depend on written communication and other written messages. People who are responsible for distributing these written communication and other messages should also make it certain that they have the best toner and ink cartridges, ink refill kits, fax machine ink film, printer ribbon, photo paper, and other office supplies. Actually, it would be best if they could find a store where they could get all these items and be guaranteed of the quality of each one. Those who are liable in the circulation of these written communication should also have spare at all times and have the phone number of the people who could provide them with the items that they need for printing whenever needed. These may seem small and insignificant to some people, but without this, other people would find it hard to communicate with others and get the job done on time and properly.

Emotica Online lets you create your own emoji video game

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

It seems emoji are taking over the world: people are ordering pizza with them, Chevy made a press release out of them, and, some day, we might replace our passwords with them. So how about an emoji video game? Thanks to game developer Anna Anthropy, we’ve got one, and it’s called Emotica Online.

“Game” might not be quite the right word for it, however. Emotica plays like Pokémon Red — minus all that turn-based combat business. Your little character (you start off as a cat) just explores the wonderful world of emoji from a top-down view. You can chat with villagers and see what happens when you interact with (i.e. bump into) certain objects. Note: I’ve been told by a trusty Christmas tree that you should never listen to a fir.

New Book Emphasizes Virtue of Conformity in Apache Culture

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

PINETOP–

LAKESIDE, Ariz. (PRWEB) May 30, 2015 — “In nearly all cultures, stories and rules serve as moral compass to guide the youth on their true passage to adulthood,” historian and author Judith W. Vicario says. The Apache tribe is no different. Mothers and fathers can speak to their children, admonishing them about respect and traditions. Adherence to the rules dictates survival. But there always comes one person who will challenge the tribal authority and customs. Such is the story of “Apaches – Legend of the Crown Dancers” (published by Xlibris). In this compelling fiction, Vicario weaves a story that demonstrates the terrible repercussions of selfish pursuits in a society that thrives so much on consensus.

Set in the ancient landscape of Cibecue, Arizona, “Apaches” chronicles the story of a young girl who seeks to break the norms and traditions of her culture. She broke the rules without considering the possible consequences of her action to herself and to her people. The spirits of the creator, the Crown Dancers or the Gaan are not to be disrespected and upon learning what the girl did, they decide to conclude the matter through a severe punishment. The account that followed illustrates a rich detail of what happens when you defy traditions.

“There is an endless appeal of examples on how following the morals of a society pertains to daily living. This book provides such exemplification, calling into mind the daily accounts of children and adults who believe they can or are entitled to commit any number of crimes against society just because they ‘want’ something.”

Pulsating with vivid descriptions of the culture, “Apaches” does not only incite moral guidance for children but also provide useful facts for those seeking in-depth knowledge of the Apache culture.

About the Author

Judith A. Vicario graduated from California State University at Los Angeles with a bachelor’s degree in history and went on to receive a teaching credential. She taught school in Glendale, California for several years and decided to return to Arizona. Rather than continue a teaching career, she took a job with the White Mountain Apache Tribe as editor of the Fort Apache Scout, tribal newspaper. During her time with the Tribe, Vicario readily took the opportunity to write about all facets of daily Apache life, as well as exploring Apache culture and traditions. The Fort Apache Scout newspaper maintained subscribers all over the world. Vicario lives in Pinetop, Arizona, about three miles from the reservation.

Venapro Review

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common ailments which are faced by man. The condition is marked by swelling around the anal opening along with severe pain, as well as bleeding. Hemorrhoids are actually veins around the anal opening which become enlarged. This causes severe pain in the region, especially during passing of stools, and quite often results in bleeding. There are several reasons which have been linked to the condition, such as strain during passing of stools, irregular eating habits, constipation, and even coughing and sneezing.

However, even when the condition arises, few people would like to talk about it and even fewer would actually go ahead and seek medical assistance in this regard. This often leads to the worsening of the situation, where surgery is the only option left. It is therefore, important that you seek medical assistance in this regard, in the initial stages itself. This would save you from a lot of trouble.

When it comes to the treatment of hemorrhoids, one of the most popular solutions is that of Venapro. Venapro has become quite popular in the recent times, with more and more people opting for it. This medicine has been tried by a large number o people over the world, and most of them have been able to achieve remarkable recovery with its help. What makes this medicine so popular is that it is made of natural products and hence do not carry any side effects as such.

As it is, hemorrhoid is a very uncomfortable condition and it can not only hamper your social life, but can also make a dent in your professional life as well. Due to this reason, it is better to get rid of it, as soon as possible. The medicine boasts of an excellent anti-inflammatory formula, which plays an effective role in the treatment of this condition.  It is one of the best non surgical treatments and is therefore far better than the surgical options, which should be avoided in most accounts.

As it is, the effectiveness of this medicine can be judged from the fact, that most of the sites which sell venapro, offer a money back guarantee to the customers. This is done to induce faith in the customers, in regard to the product. Once they start using it, they realize its benefits and then promote it to others. The medicine has been an outcome of years of research and experiments, and is no flash in the pan. It is perhaps due to this reason that the medicine has become so popular in the recent times.

Venapro can provide instant hemroid relief.

When people talks about animation industry most of the people describes it as a cool, amazing, interesting, glorious, and so on. No doubt that the individuals who have completed their studies in computer graphic animation are constantly searching for good career opportunities with better jobs in animation industry.

As a matter of fact, no matter in which part of the world you are in, there must be a shortage of job vacancies for animators, ultimately shortage of jobs in animation industry. If we sum it up, there are more people pursuing to become animators than the studios offering the positions.

In the midst of this competitive market scenario, this is the opportunity and place for the computer graphic artist to enhance his skill set and excel in representing and packaging himself. At first you may need to learn the art of effective communication skills. In most of the cases submitting the Showreels for jobs in animation in bigger studios might not be sufficient enough to get the attention that you are seeking for. This is because ‘as bigger they are as busy they are’ they might be too stuffed with their work and overlook your portfolio. Ultimately, getting to know someone directly and with having a name to contact you, you might get your portfolio to be viewed faster. And if your Showreel is good, you can get hired by a studio, especially when they are looking out for some new talent.

But sometimes even if you have some contact, your Showreel is really good yet still you may not be able to get a job in animation. This is because the animation studio is not looking to hire someone at this point of time. Still it’s not a time to be disappointed as they will keep your portfolio for future when they do have a vacancy.

Moreover, there are indeed number of industries wherein you can get the jobs in animation. For a start you can start working with web designing company, graphic designing company, game designing company, architectural firm, a media company, a product design company, an advertising company or even an automobile company. Publishers Can Learn a Few Things from Programmers

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Emma Barnes Bibliocloud coding ebook publishersAs both a publisher and a programmer, I’m a member of a very select club.

It consists of both those who started out as coders and went into publishing and those who did the reverse. I’m in the latter group, having co-founded a little indie press called Snowbooks in 2003. When I needed a system to run the company and found the software on the market both hugely expensive and horrible to use, I buckled down and learned to code. The result was my own back-office publishing management software, called Bibliocloud (which, delightfully, lots of publishers now use).

Admittedly, it took about a decade. But along the way, though, I’ve been struck by many similarities between the worlds of code and publishing. And I believe that being able to identify and act upon them has made me a better publisher.

Coding has a fairly long learning curve. With about 10,000 hours under my belt, I’d put now myself at the ‘adequately competent’ stage on a spectrum of capability that starts at ‘complete novice.’ The other main developer of Bibliocloud—a chap with more than twenty-five years’ experience at Oracle—is right up at the ‘super-productive expert’ level at the top. From where I am at the moment, though, I’m good enough to see the beauty in code, just as I can see the beauty in any writing.

You may never have written code, but you’ve read books. I bet you’ve appreciated the clarity that comes from brevity, or the careful crafting of a narrative flow, or the finely-edited end-result of a piece of prose, honed and whittled and buffed to perfection. So it is with code.

Writing—whether code or prose—is a craft, an art. Code, perhaps even more so than prose, is an expression of the author’s personality and philosophy. Some publishers turn their hands to novel writing. I don’t have a novel in me, but I did have a two-hundred-thousand-line Ruby on Rails application, it turns out.

Some code, to me at least, even reads quite literally like poetry. Here’s a Ruby method:

def self.high_price_band

where price > 10

end

=> Book.high_price_band

Read it out loud and it’s almost a haiku:

def self, dot high price band,

where price is greater than ten

end; call Book dot high price band.

If there are similarities in writing—whether it’s code, prose, scholarship or even poetry—there are also comparisons to be drawn in how we get it ready for publication or deployment.

Some code can be dashed out, fit to prove a point or get to the Minimum Viable Product stage. I look with some cynicism upon weekend-long hackathons, knowing from experience how much reflection, effort, testing, iteration and planning is needed to produce a really strong, dependable piece of code. In the same way, we have bursts of hurried activity in publishing: We’ll wallop out a series to fit with something newsworthy, or with a new course, or some other time-based tie-in.

But the best publishing comes from a strategy—from well-thought-out, well-planned, purposeful publishing. From bringing forth books because we know there’s a market for them. From publishing into a space we understand, and by using our in-depth knowledge of genres and insights from audience research to reach our readers on their own terms.

In fact, that’s one area where some programmers could learn from publishers. More apps and start-ups would succeed if they came from a real understanding of the market, rather than because the programmer thought the code would be interesting and fun to work on. That said, many programmers seem to be great at understanding why they’re doing something and continuously asking whether it’s a good way of doing things.

I like what coding has done to my brain. After thousands of hours of forcing it to do new things, I can more skillfully break down a problem into its parts, work through each part one by one and build or rebuild a solution. Mental agility is something you have to work hard at, and that’s true as well for organizations struggling to innovate and iterate quickly without falling to pieces. Coding is great for this.

Programmers, I would say, are more naturally inclined toward long-term productivity than publishers. We’re lazy and tend to get bored easily. We would rather spend a week writing some code to automate a ten-minute task than repeat it every week for a year. And so programmers have some conventions: DRY—don’t repeat yourself—is a good one; YAGNI—you ain’t gonna need it—helps you to figure out which code should be written and which is optional.

Convention over configuration—a way of getting the basics organized and routine so you can focus on the interesting, creative, new aspects of things. If publishers had zero tolerance for repetition and boring administrative tasks, what would the industry look like? And how would publishers’ organizations reflect that internally?

Having admired convention, there’s nothing to stop individual coders going right against convention and doing something totally different. The Linux operating system, the programming language Ruby, the web development framework Rails all came about because one person decided there was a better way to do something.

There’s an all-pervading attitude of continual improvement in programming. Take a look at Github, the code repository used by most programmers to save every iteration of their work. Repositories have thousands of incremental changes and edits. Programmers naturally hone and whittle and constantly improve. They automate the dull stuff so they can think about the bigger picture.

Yet within both sectors, there’s an attitude that prizes craftsmanship and best practices, proving these impulses—to innovate boldly and to hold small, familiar things precious—can be powerfully complementary, not mutually exclusive.

Since code is also the thing that generates what users know as software, we can think of code as a metaphor for the way we go about producing our books. The way it typically works today, programmers write the code, which then runs to produce a user interface, like a website, generated from HTML behind the scenes. In one, you can have horrible, clunky code producing a fairly decent-looking user interface, to an extent—but push it too much and it’ll slow down and generate errors, and it won’t scale well.

On the other hand, lovely, elegant, thoughtful code produces solid, dependable, beautiful software. With publishing, I think that you can get out what customers experience as a serviceable book (print or digital), where the content is great and the production value high, yet if the process of getting that book out was horrible and confused—if it was all swan on the surface but frantic paddling going on underneath—then that’s not scalable or sustainable, and there are bigger problems that need addressing. You should take as much pride in the way you produce books as the books themselves.

All the value and characteristics I’ve discussed—clear thinking, automation, productivity, continual improvement and craftsmanship—are baked into programming’s core. But these aren’t just skills we can extract and apply to our own world. The best way to develop these attributes—if they sound like things you indeed want to value—is to practice code. Become a developer. Face the intricacies, the struggles, the delicious, aggravating complexities that code, like nothing else, provides.

When you know what you can do with code—when you know what’s possible, when it’s obvious that you should automate something or integrate with another system or write a new protocol for describing an interesting way to reach readers—even (and especially!) if you need to ask more practiced programmers for help—you’ll have the strengths of programming on your side.

Here’s a Ruby method:

def self.high_price_band

where price > 10

end

=> Book.high_price_band

I too had a Love Story ? Book Review

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

‘I too had a Love Story’ is the debut novel of the author, Ravinder Singh, who beautifully depicts the beauty and power of true love through his own heart touching love story. The past tense in the title of the book makes one curious about it.

It is the narrative of the journey of meeting of two strangers, Ravin and Khushi through a matrimonial site to the point, where their relationship becomes the most precious gift of the god.

Not all love stories are meant to have a perfect ending. Some stay incomplete. Yet they are beautiful in their own way. Ravin’s love story is one such innocent and beautiful love story. The writer believes that love stories seldom die. This is how he begins:-

I remembers the date will: 4th March 2006. I was in Kolkata and about to reach Happy’s home. I had been very excited all morning as I was going to see our gang of four after three years. Ravinder and Khushi had never seen each other. But love had made them one. The writer has graphically delineated their conservation, feeling and emotions. Impatiently waiting for the next call, little surprises bringing them closer, late night conservations, tears and smiles, these entire make read-till-finish book.

Soft & Light hearted humour strewn throughout adds an entertainment quotient to the story. The writer tickles a funny bone as he talks about his paranoia when revealing his love affair to his parents. Tears roll down when an accident leave Khushi battering with death and Ravinder shattered. The writer has summed up the essence of his story in the most appealing terms. Not everyone in this world has the fate to cherish the fullest form of love. Some are born, just to experience the abbreviation of it.

It has a tragic end, which explains the past tense of the title. The book neither has a meticulously crafted plot nor it is a literacy piece. Even then, the simplicity of the book and the honesty with which the author has written it makes us empathize with the author and it did struck a chord in our heart.

Getting the Best Broadband Deals from your Internet Service Provider

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can be tricky. ISPs provide millions of people worldwide with broadband internet, which refers to the newer technology used to speed up the internet by processing data at a faster rate. It is in contrast to the older Dial-up internet, which processes data at less than half the broadband rate, and also requires the disruption of telephones lines for internet capabilities. Internet Service Providers are like any other corporation or large-scale business: they aim for the highest profit out of the lowest input. They charge high prices and do not always supply their customers with the fastest downloading speeds possible. However, ISPs also have a weakness common to all businesses: they do not want to lose their customers.

If you don’t think you’re getting your money’s worth, or have simply decided to enrich your home with high speed internet capabilities, it is time to take a look around. There is a lot more competition for broadband in the UK. Some of the more popular internet service providers include BT, Virgin, TalkTalk, PlusNet, O2 and Sky. Once your current ISP knows that you’re considering other services, they might be more agreeable to better prices and enhanced speed.

If your heart is set on trying out a new provider altogether, bartering is a useful tool. There is a lot of competition between ISPs in the United Kingdom, consumers have the power to lower their prices through bartering. The top broadband providers. Most of the provide monthly or latest up-to-date deals and updates, offers, packages and bundles. Indeed with the bundles, very often if you get a bundle that is relevant to what you watch on TV and where you call around the world you can often save money overall and end up getting free TV and Calls! It is releatively easy to find broadband deals if you know where to look. A great place to start searching is the internet- find the best broadband deals through search engines like Google, or simply visit the websites of any of the internet service providers mentioned above.

A great way to get ahead of the ISPs is by testing internet download speed to determine if it complies with consumer expectations. There are several different websites that allow individuals to do this. Some broadband comparison sites will also have these tests available. These tests can be used to compare broadband speed between ISPs, and determine which are best for your home.

PC sales of Batman: Arkham Knight suspended due to crippling performance issues

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Warner Bros. released Batman: Arkham Knight earlier this week on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. While Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners have — by most accounts — enjoyed the fourth game in the punchy action series, PC players found a world beset by more than just Gotham’s thugs. Bugs, glitches, and performance issues ruined the Bat-fantasy for a significant number of PC gamers, making the game essentially unplayable in extreme cases. The situation is so dire that now, less than a week after it was launched, Warner Bros has decided to suspend sales of the game’s PC version until the problems are fixed.

The company posted a statement on its forums confirming that it was removing the game from sale. “Dear Batman: Arkham Knight PC…

French Festival Honors Syrian and Lebanese Authors

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

The organizers of le Marathon des mots know it has never been a more important time for the public to hear what authors from Syria and Lebanon have to say.

Just over ten years old, the literary festival le Marathon des mots, (the Marathon of words) is held on the last weekend of each June in the southwestern city of Toulouse and its surroundings. Writers from Buenos Aires were the guests of honor in 2013 while last year Istanbul-Taksim was celebrated, in support of the anti-government protests held in Taksim square. This year Syria and Lebanon are the timely guests of honor with an impressive line-up of writers and poets from both countries.

The aim of the festival is invite the public, using texts, to reflect upon the state of the world. Given the tragic situation in Syria, its intimate political and cultural relationship with its neighbor, Lebanon, and the fact that over time many Syrian writers, banned in their own country, have been published in Lebanon, it has never been more important for the public to hear what these authors have to say.

Lebanese poets Vénus Khoury-Ghata and Salah Stétié will open the festival, followed by readings and events with fifteen or so Lebanese and Syrian writers.

A look at Friday’s schedule shows actress Marie-Christine Barrault reading from Lebanese author and this year’s Man Booker International finalist Hoda Barakat’s novel, Le Royaume de cette terre (the Realm of this Earth), actor and theatre and opera director Daniel Mesguich will read from Lebanese author Rabee Jaber’s The Druze of Belgrade, and from Lebanese author Jabbour Douaihy’s St Georges regardait ailleurs (St. George was looking elsewhere). A special treat will be a meeting with Syrian author Rosa Yassin Hassan, who has been living in exile in Germany for the past three years. Her third novel, Les Gardiens de l’air (The Guardians of Air) was published last year by Actes Sud’s rich Arabic literature imprint, Sindbad under the direction of Farouk Mardam-Bey, who will be at the festival accompanying a number of his authors. Mardam-Bey also published the powerful prison novel, La Coquille (The Shell) by Syrian writer Moustafa Khalifé as well as Akram Krabet’s Treize ans dans les prisons Syriennes (Thirteen years in Syrian prisons).

Lebanese author and French academician Amin Maalouf will meet with the public; there will be a screening of the devastating and compelling 2014 documentary, Eau Argenté (Silvered Water), about Syria’s tragic descent into civil war, by filmmaker Oussama Mohamed, in collaboration with Wiam Simav Bedirxan, followed by an event with Syrian journalist and author Hala Kodmani, who will be discussing the situation in Syria as well as in two other events along with Lebanese author Najwa M. Barakat, Syrian writer Mariam Antaki and Farouk Mardam-Bey.

Friday’s schedule shows how rich the programming of the festival is, and how literature can help explain the tragedies taking place in Syria today. Mardam-Bey was recently quoted in an article in Le Monde newspaper in answer to the question of whether a war literature was emerging [from Syria] similar to the Lebanese:

“Undoubtedly. War freed Lebanese literature—whether in Arabic or French-from the clichés it had been tied to—that Lebanon had been a land of plenty, a model of friendly communities…War showed the more sordid aspects of society—which exist all over the world. The literature had to evoke the horrors that had been experienced. There is nothing worse than a civil war. In Syria there is something harsher going on, something even more destructive. I think it will add a tragic dimension—in the strongest sense of the word—to Syrian literature.”
