Alternative High Street

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Sick of clone High Streets? Don’t worry, Wales’s market towns are refreshingly “real”. Discover how one historic market town is managing to reinvent itself while keeping faith with its heritage.

There are a few things that are likely to happen while you are in Ruthin. You’ll meet helpful, friendly people. You’ll relax into the peaceful pace and, let’s be honest, you might get rained on. But you’re unlikely to get lost.

It’s not a large town. Most roads lead to St Peter’s Square, at the top of the hill and flanked by handsome timber-framed buildings. So, it’s slightly embarrassing that we did, in fact, get lost. Blame it on all those pretty shops and long views down sloping roads over striking roof lines and beyond to the Clwydian Range. Very distracting.

I’m here with my friend Charlotte. I’m from Brighton, she’s from Manchester. Having dropped our bags at our hotel, the beautiful Manorhaus, we head out and quickly discover that Ruthin boasts a surprising number of shops – and Boots is the only chain store. “This is a real treat,” says Charlotte. “Time to shop and lots of independent stores, too.” “And no kids to interrupt us, either,” I add. On that cheery note, we march off.

Ruthin has the brass tacks outlets – butcher, ironmonger and bakery – alongside a handful of upmarket boutiques and jewellery shops, including Mococo and Twenty3. We’re more interested in the stores that sit somewhere in between the practical and the indulgent.

Like Leonardo’s, our first stop. A thriving deli, it is packed with shoppers, picking up a Snowdonia Whisky Cheese sandwich or some fresh-baked brownies. Charlotte picks some apricot and ginger chutney and we both take some of Leornardo’s awardwinning chicken, leek and laverbread pies.

Honey buns, a Ruthin speciality, make an irresistible snack. We tuck into one each, a sweet, bready treat that’s incredibly filling.

Leonardo’s has been in business for 10 years, while the Ruthin Book Shop, just down the hill, has been run by Janet Kenyon-Thompson for 25. Janet says her customers come from far and wide, with locals mainly coming in for maps.

Down the hill, Tilly Mint opened in 2008 in a cosy basement with a timbered ceiling. It’s just the kind of shop I love, packed with vintage collectables, from sparkly Sixties handbags to 1930s postcards and Victorian ceramics. I’m drawn to the boxes full of old advertising cards, but eventually fall for a framed Victorian seascape and bag it for my living room wall.

It sounds like elephants are doing aerobics upstairs, but it’s just Spavens the sweet shop above. It’s a mecca for heavy-footed kids. Charlotte has a notoriously sweet tooth so dives in for a bag of strawberry bonbons and some blackcurrant liquorice “the traditonal sort – my favourite”.

Nearby on the square, we find Cerrig & The Green Lady, a sweet-scented emporium of toiletries and cosmetics made with natural ingredients, many from small producers in Wales and the UK. Charlotte treats herself to some Neal’s Yard Toning Eye Gel, an indulgence at £19.55, but there are plenty of goodies for just a few pounds too, from handmade soap to beeswax candles.

Ruthin is clearly working hard at attracting visitors with unique, independent shops, while also remaining a down-to-earth market town. Of course, it would be wrong to judge Ruthin solely on its shops. It has plenty of history; a medieval settlement with a castle built by Edward I (now the Ruthin Castle Hotel), the town was burnt to the ground by Welsh hero Owain Glyndwˆ r in 1400.

Consequently, many of Ruthin’s buildings have medieval cellars (the only part to survive the fire) topped with timber-framed constructions from later in the 15th century, like Nantclwyd y Dre, Wales’ oldest timber-framed building. I loved all the old, handsome buildings.

A contrast to all this history is new kid on the block, Ruthin Craft Centre, opened in 2008. It’s an exquisitely-designed space with three galleries hosting the best in international contemporary applied art.

The centre is lovely to stroll around, with a cafe and gift shop, sorry, “retail gallery”, too, selling high-quality glassware, ceramics and jewellery, a gorgeous Welsh blanket catches my eye, but at over £200 it’s a purchase that will have to wait until the next time.

Having pottered, shopped and lingered in the Craft Centre, we lunched on our Leonardo’s pies. We’d planned a walk in the Clwydian Range to round off our day, but the hills are obscured by drizzle, so we retreat to the comfort of Manorhaus, where owner Gavin Harris serves tea in the rich red lounge.

Refurbished in 2007, each of its eight rooms has a king-size bed, goose-down duvet and deliciously crisp Egyptian cotton bedlinen. They have been designed in collaboration with local artists.

I’m in Oriel 5, decorated with paintings by Ian Williams. There’s an impressive roll top bath by the sash window (I did pull down the blind before using it, to spare Ruthin’s blushes), a wet room and a lounge area with its own fireplace. I could have happily moved in for the week.

It’s very easy to relax at Manorhaus, with help from the steam room, cinema and restaurant where, in the evening, Charlotte and I devour three fantastic courses, including heavenly poached haddock and a rich rabbit stew.

My only regret is that Gavin baulked at showing us his robes. He’s mayor until May this year, and eager to see the town prosper. “The chain is great,” he confides, “but the robes are a bit musty.”

Pushkin Press Opens Pop-up Shop in New Cinema

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Picturehouse Central Cinemas

London’s Pushkin Press has become one of the founding partners of Picturehouse Central cinema and will have a pop-up shop in the theater to sell books.

By Dennis Abrams

Pushkin PressIndependent publisher Pushkin Press, known for publishing some of the twentieth century’s most widely acclaimed authors (Stefan Zweig, Paul Morand and Yashui Inoue to name a few) as well as award-winning contemporary writers (including Edith Pearlman and Andres Neuman) has become one of the founding partners of London’s Picturehouse Central cinema, and will have a pop-up shop in the theater, selling books along with the usual cinematic treats.

The Bookseller reported that the shop will display books from the Pushkin Collection, “including titles by Stefan Zweig, many of which have been filmed multiple times and inspired Wes Anderson’s Oscar-winning “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Publisher and m.d. of Pushkin Press, Adam Freudenheim, told The Bookseller that, “I’m thrilled for Pushkin to be a key part of the new, flagship Picturehouse Central. So many great films have been inspired by books that it’s fitting for books to have a central place at this exciting new cinema.”

Noting that the six-week shop would be a trial period for both Pushkin and the theater, he added, “If it’s a roaring success it could go longer. It’s an experiment, and we’re both very excited about it.

Clare Binns, director of programming and acquisitions at Picturehouse, told the paper that Pushkin’s “dedication to idiosyncratic publications and their beautifully designed books” were “a natural fit with the spirit of the new cinema, which has at its heart a passion for the indie sensibility, a respect for the old but also a love of the innovative and the new in arts production.”

Museum bookstores have become a proven source of income for publishers. Can movie bookstores be far behind?

Disney"s A Christmas Carol

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Disney’s A Christmas Carol might have been better titled Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as screenwriter/director Robert Zemeckis has very faithfully adapted the classic short story by blending the original text, as set similarly in the outstanding 1951 version starring Alistair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge, with the exhilarating visual style achieved through the digital motion-capture animation technique that he established with The Polar Express in 2004. This time, instead of Tom Hanks, we have the rubber-faced, Jerry Lewis-esque, comedian Jim Carrey playing the various ages of Scrooge, as well as all three of the ghosts of Christmas who visit him.

I am not a fan of the default Carrey performance in the kind of broad, slapstick comedy films that made him a household name but here he proves, as he has done before with The Truman Show, Man On The Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that he is in fact a very facile character actor capable of bringing great depth and nuances to his roles not only physically and vocally but also emotionally; his Scrooge is totally believable and wryly humorous plus his transformation, even for one as familiar as I am with the tale, manages to lift the spirits and imbue one with the joy of Christmas.

Co-stars Colin Firth who plays Scrooge’s cheerful nephew Fred and Gary Oldman who plays the ghost of Scrooge’s dead partner Jacob Marley, his long-suffering clerk Bob Cratchit and Cratchit’s ailing son Tiny Tim, also make the most of the motion-capture technology giving supporting performances of great subtlety with a level of detail and range of expression infinitely greater than seen before in The Polar Express; the snowy street scenes of Victorian London are particularly well rendered as are the candlelit interiors. I did see the film in 3D at the cinema when it was released last year but I much prefer seeing it at home in 2D, as I am yet to be convinced by the merit of home 3D systems and find the depth of field depicted in the standard Blu-ray presentation more than sufficient.

Zemeckis has proven he has integrity both with The Polar Express which is equally true to Chris Van Allsburg original book illustrations and A Christmas Carol by presenting an exceedingly authentic Dickensian version, albeit updated slightly by the inclusion of some spectacular action sequences, this easily could have been far more Disneyfied as the title would suggest.

This authenticity dispels any doubts I initially had when I heard that he is currently working on a motion-capture remake of the cult Beatles cartoon Yellow Submarine and I am now very eagerly awaiting it’s release date, tentatively pencilled for the summer of 2012 which seems a heck of a long way off. I shall put that thought aside and savour the current bout of snow and settle down for another viewing of Disney’s A Christmas Carol, a merrier Christmas Carol than we have seen for many a year!

Vintage Cinema Returns via Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage, with Shahin Sean Solimon and Patrick Stewart, swinging to Home VOD in December

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) November 11, 2014

Set sail for the throwback adventure of the year as Giant Flick Films proudly announces ‘Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage’ (2014) premiering on Home VOD December 2nd, 2014.

Written, directed, and starring Persian-American actor Shahin Sean Solimon, Sinbad – narrated by the inimitable Patrick Stewart (X-Men : Days of Future Past) – is a crowd-pleasing throwback to the classic adventure yarns of yesteryear. When the Sultan’s first-born daughter, Princess Parisa, is abducted by an evil sorcerer, Sinbad is tasked with traveling through a desert of magic and mythical creatures to save her. He must defeat the Cyclops, the Goliath Crab, and the legendary Rok Bird to escape with their lives.

Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage utilizes the old school ‘Stop Animation” practical VFX, combined with live action, such as in the Ray Harryhausen style ‘Seventh Voyage of Sinbad’ movies, yet using modern day technology to enhance them.

“It’s been a childhood dream of mine to be able to play this character,” says Solimon, who plays Sinbad. “This is a live-action version of it – not a cartoon version of it – and it’s a very serious version.”

“Having an opportunity to make this film has been an unbelievable gift, and there is much more film making that we are planning to do, bringing these wonderful stories back.” adds the actor and filmmaker.

Starring Shahin Sean Solimon, Patrick Stewart (X-Men, Star Trek : The Next Generation), Lorna Raver (Drag Me to Hell), Isaac C. Singleton Jr (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl), Sadie Alexandru (TVs Mad Men), and Said Faraj (TVs 24), Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage is released on VOD December 2 and on DVD in February 2015.
