Home Renovation Magazine

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Home renovation is big business. The market of renovation spreads from contractors, designers, websites and most famously Home Renovation Magazines. It revolves around the idea of “working with what you have.” Rather than pack-up and finding another home with everything a person or family desires in a home, which costs so much more, people opt for a renovation instead. It is cheaper, more logical and leaves the homeowner with more creative control with each and every element of the house from color and layout to what to keep and what to dispose.

Most renovations are based on one important factor – AN IDEA. More specifically, an appealing idea. But before an idea becomes tangible, a home owner needs to consider it’s feasibility and how it ties-up with the rest of the renovation plan. There are a lot of homes that have been ruined by random ideas which were individually appealing but ended up as a disaster collectively. That is where Home Renovation Magazines become a great help.

Home renovation magazines are good sources for ideas that work and compliment each plan of redesign. These magazines give pointers on what to choose, what to pair and what to avoid. The main goal is to prevent design errors that stem from too many elements mixed into a single idea. Theme, budget and feasibility are important factors that most home renovation magazines are great at setting.

Find what you want by selecting a design that fits a theme. The theme dictates the overall revamp of the household. The budget expands or limits the renovation from conservative to elaborate. While feasibility works to ensure that what is desired is doable and applicable. In the pages of a home renovation magazine, various ideas for design per room or per house can help in making decisions that would otherwise be confusing. The result of theme, budget and feasibility translates to beauty, affordability and success.

For great ideas and even greater results, check out “Today’s RENOVATION.” Today’s Renovation is a brand new magazine resource for homeowners who are searching for landscaping tips, design kitchens, renovations and kitchen articles. Today’s Renovation gives you design ideas for your renovation needs; interior design, full renovations, room-specific renovations, popular renovations and even environmentally conscious designs for those who prefer to “go green.”

Inkjet Printing 101

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

By the 1970s, printers that are capable of printing out the images from a desktop computer have already been developed and have started to gain popularity. These are called the inkjet printers, which are in use even until today, having undergone many improvements and changes since. Inkjet printers are not used as much by commercial printers in commercial printing, who usually specialize in offset printing, and they are more commonly used in normal households and office. Still, for those who wish to learn more about this type of printing, here are some facts about inkjet printing.

As mentioned above, inkjet printers are a type of computer printers. In concept, what these printers do is to print out documents and images by propelling the ink directly onto a print medium, usually paper.

There are several technologies when talking about inkjet printing. Namely, these are the continuous inkjet printing (CIJ), thermal drop-on-demand, and the piezoelectric drop-on-demand. Continuous inkjet printing makes use of high-pressure pumps, piezoelectric crystals, and electrostatic fields in order to eject and control the path of the droplets of ink. Primarily, CIJ is used for marking different products. Thermal drop-on-demand, on the other hand, uses a heating element and pressure in order for the ink to be propelled onto the print medium. Lastly, piezoelectric drop-on-demand, as its name implies, makes use of piezoelectric materials as opposed to thermal drop-on-demand’s heating elements.

Not going into full detail about the functionality of an inkjet printer and all of the different processes which constitute the overall printing process, let us move on to a less technical description of the advantages and the disadvantages of inkjet printers.

For starters, the operation of inkjet printers is quieter than that of impact dot matrix printers as well as daisywheel printers. They are also less expensive in terms of cost per page and have no real need for any warm-up time when compared to other printing technologies. As for disadvantages, inkjet prints have a greater tendency to fade over the years as well as to blur because of the solubility of the ink in water. And speaking of the ink, it can be very expensive to buy. Added functionality within the printer can also lead to false errors in printing and ink level detection, which at the worst case can lead to a printer refusing to print using a cartridge. Finally, the nozzles of the printer can be prone to clogging. Now, these disadvantages have been addressed to a certain extent, solving most if not all of these concerns.

Inkjet printing is just one of the many printing technologies that are accessible to the world nowadays. This technology is a very important advancement which, in some way, contributed to modern printing, along with commercial printers and commercial printing today. While the trend nowadays is slowly going towards laser printing, advanced digital printing, and 3d printing, it cannot be denied that inkjet printing has been an important step towards the current printing capability of the whole world.

Elegy for a Lost French Bookshop…and Freedom

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

The original location of La Hune bookshop (Photo: Actualitte)

At the New Yorker, Adam Gopnik laments the closing of a bookshop in Paris, ultimately tying it to a loss of a kind of personal freedom.

By Edward Nawotka

At The New Yorker, Adam Gopnick eulogizes the closing of La Hune bookshop in Paris. The reasons why it closed are multiple: the owner died in 2010 and Flammarion held management of the store and moved the premesis in 2011, but encountered numerous real estate issues.

It is a place “that brought the special feel and aura and even smells of French literary culture into my heart, as it had into those of many other Americans.” I

He explains,

The quality it offered, very different from any English or American bookstore, was of a high seriousness of purpose, uncut by gaiety, but still surprisingly well disposed towards amateur readers. La Hune demonstrated the oddly severe, puritanical nature of French publishing, with almost everything published only in paperback and, until recently, without any cover illustration or come-on, only the title and the name of the author, the familiar brand color of the maison d’édition, and, at most, a dark band around the book with a cryptic subtitle or explanatory note (“The New Duras”; “Glucksmann on Sixty-Eight,” or the like). These books seemed unyielding in their affirmation of philosophical literariness; like the great French film stars of the postwar period, they seemed to exhale their cigarettes directly in your face, so to speak, begging neither quarter nor favor.

And he sees in French book culture a tie to la seduction, something that is so central to French life:

The rows and rows of book, placed horizontally, in the French fashion, seemed to offer a landscape of unvarying, unblinking sagacity. You are here to woo us, and enter our thoughts, the books declared; we are not leaping up, waving our arms, or our author photos, hand on chin, in your face, to woo you. At La Hune, you felt both intimidated and enlightened, a nice double whammy.

He then goes on to offer a terse, if beautiful description of the serendipity of book browsing:

At a minor level, once a bookstore is gone we lose the particular opportunities for adjacency it offers, determined by something other than an algorithm. It is rarely the book you came to seek, but the book next to that book, which changes your mind and heart.

Is that not often a bit like falling in love. How frequently to you find that you are set up on a date, only to fall for the person sitting next to your intended?

But back to the bookstore…in its closing he ultimately sees a loss of freedom:

The deeper, macro answer of why a closing bookstore is a loss to freedom, is that free-market societies—at times by compensatory instinct, at times by compulsory instruction—have built, alongside the responsive market with its unending appetite for change, smaller institutions where people can exchange ideas, share spaces, be in contact, feel at home, without any particular institutional endorsement from higher authorities.

It is well worth the time you’ll take to browse, errr, read it

Make a Website - Should You Use a Template to Make Your Website?

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

There are two main approaches to creating a new website. Either you start from scratch, a blank page, or you use a template. I will argue that using a template is the better method.

It is sometimes claimed that using a website template to create a new website is not a good idea. The main reasoning is that websites based on templates all end up looking the same. But this is not true, templates based website only look the same when the user does not make enough modifications to the template.

It is argued that there are only around 7 types of stories: the quest, voyage and return, rebirth, overcoming the monster, etc. Yet from these 7 base stories there a millions of unique stories. Every book from every library has elements on these 7 types and yet nobody would claim that they are all the same. Every book is unique and different. It is what you do with the base stories that makes it unique.

The same applies for website templates. There are only a limited number of layouts that a website can be. All of them have been tried, some worked and others did not. The ones that work have been turned into templates. I do not know how many practical and working layouts there are but I would not be surprised if it is more then 7. All the websites out there are based on around 7 basic layouts.

There is absolutely no reason for you to create a website from scratch. Why reinvent the wheel? Save yourself a lot of time and effort by getting a template. A simple layout template is all you need. For example, just a header on the top for a banner, a top navigation bar, side panels for sub navigation bar and a footer – this is a basic layout.

Most templates come with a CSS file. In a matter of minutes you can have a unique website. Change the backgrounds, change the font size, color, make a side panel bigger. In ten minutes you have your own website.

On the other hand if you start with a blank page then you will be spend a few hours fiddling around just to get the basic layout. And once you are finished, you will discover that your website in no different then a template.

A template does not mean that your website will be that same as everybody else’s. Using a template means that you save hours of work that you could of spent making your website unique.

My website started as a template from which is has grown quite nicely. I have spent countless hours working on http://www.howthiswebsitemakesmoney.com, but I did not reinvent the wheel, I started with a template. Here is a website template if you a thinking of making a website of your own.

eBay Photo Tips

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Your potential eBay bidder/buyer cannot touch, smell, taste, or hear what you have for sale. But they can see your photos, and many will make their decision based on what they see. While an accurate description and clear auction terms remain very important, it is often the visual representation (i.e. your photos) which will make or break a sale.

It is not necessary to be a professional photographer or even a good amateur photographer to get good results with your Ebay photos. Nor is it necessary to have top of the line equipment. An average quality digital camera is quite adequate for most three dimensional items. (For those selling sport cards and other flat items, a flatbed scanner may be a better choice).

Here are a few tips to get the most from your eBay photos:

1. Keep it sharp ….There is probably no greater turnoff than auction photos which are fuzzy. The easiest way to get sharp photos is to use a tripod. After you have set up for your photo, set the self timer on your camera to make the actual exposure. This eliminates any possibilities of accidental vibration and also allows for longer exposures in low light conditions.

2. Unclutter the background….You want all of your buyers concentration focused on your widget. Remove anything from the cameras view that is not for sale. It is also a good idea to use a background which contrasts with your item. Lighter backgrounds for darker items, and vice versa. A hardwood floor or a solid colored fabric remnant can work quite well as background material for many items. Clothing can be photographed hung up in front of a neutral colored wall.

3. Lighting is very important…. Lighting can be one of the more difficult areas to master. Turn off your cameras automatic flash and use natural lighting whenever possible. Your object is to avoid flash glare and harsh shadows while keeping the color rendition as accurate as possible. Soft natural light filtered through a white curtain can often produce good results. Where shadows appear, position white poster board to reflect light back onto your subject. If you must use flash, the best results will be with an external bounce flash that will provide indirect lighting. It may take a bit of experimenting to get the setup just right, however it will be time well spent.

4. Watch the file size….. Keep in mind that you are publishing on the web – not making a door poster. Using the mid range settings on your camera will keep the file size down and allow the photos to load faster.

5. Use editing software with caution…. It is fine to use editing software to crop a bit and touch up the background. Use caution however when editing any aspect of the actual subject. Regardless of the magic you can do with Photoshop, it remains quite important that your photo be as accurate a representation as possible of the real thing.

6. Show the bad stuff…. When selling used items be sure and photograph any defects in the item. (they should also be noted in your written description)

Number seven is an easy one – quite simply practice until you have a system that works well for you. Objectively look at your photos and ask yourself if you would buy that widget based on the pictures alone. If the answer is yes, you can then be reasonably comfortable that buyers will feel the same way.
