Report Surveys Opportunities for English-Language Writers in China

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

China offers significant opportunities for English-language writers, says a new report produced by Nesta, The Literary Platform and Douban Read.

By Publishing Perspectives

A new report produced by Nesta in the UK, in collaboration with Literary Platform and Douban Read, looking at the potential for the Chinese book market for English-language writers has been released to coincide with the China Market Focus at this year’s BookExpo America, opening in New York today.

We offer an introductory excerpt below:

In 2014, China overtook the US to become the world’s largest economy, when measured by purchasing power parity (PPP), according to the International Monetary Fund.18 According to marketing and media network Mindshare, part of the WPP group, in order do business in China effectively and successfully, marketing strategies must focus on where consumers are digitally.

China has nearly 1 billion mobile users and 100 million of these consumers use their devices for Alipay — the online payment service for China’s largest e-commerce site Taobao. Alipay already generates double the transaction volume of PayPal globally. China today offers brands the largest expansion opportunities in comparison to other markets. This, paired with the high level of governmental control and regulations in traditional media, has many international brands questioning where and how to allocate their marketing budget. Brands are turning to digital as the key to unlock the China market.

By December 2014, the number of internet users in China had reached 649 million, of which the number of mobile internet users was 557 million (or 85.8%), according to the 35th Statistical Report on Internet Development in China.

Data from Nielsen’s 2013 Mobile Consumer Report showed that 89% of Chinese consumers aged 16+ had a mobile phone.

The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China estimates that the business of English-language learning is worth 30 billion Yuan (£3.2 billion), with more than 50,000 companies operating in this area.

The International Publishers Association puts the value of the Chinese book (print and digital editions) market at €15.3 billion (£11.4 billion), naturally making it a market that all foreign publishers are looking to better understand.

China alone, by now the second largest publishing market worldwide, accounts for more than half of the BRIC countries’ global market share (to be exact, over 12% of global publishing). The Chinese publishing industry is expected to grow further, driven by domestic consumption and the aspiration for a better education of the expanding middle class in China’s large urban regions.

China’s Market Potential

According to a survey conducted by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, the average Chinese adult reads 4.77 books in 2013, about 0.38 books more than the equivalent figure in 2012. Reading times for an adult on a mobile phone averaged 21.7 minutes a day in 2013, 5.18 minutes longer than in 2012.24

The same 2013 survey put the ‘Book Reading Rate’ (defined as ‘the population of readers who read at least one book every year divided by the population of educated people in China’) at 57.8% of the population in 2013.

Just over half (50.1%) of the Chinese population reads digitally (including reading online on PC, mobile phone, e-reader and other devices). When reading digitally, 44.4% of adult Chinese read online via desktop computers, 41.9% on mobile phones, and 5.8% on e-readers.

For British publishers and writers to understand the potential of China’s digital market, however, it is imperative not only to understand how traditional Chinese publishers are changing, but also to understand the strength and popularity of China’s online literature market, which sits outside of China’s traditional publishing sector.

You can download the entire report here.

Getting Connected To Free Voip

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

It is simple to download any of these free VoIP enabled Instant Messengers. You simply go to their websites, and click on installation/download links for the applications and follow the instructions. You will need speakers and a microphone-and of course, a soundboard. If you would like to incorporate video

with your Instant Messaging, you can hook up a small digital camera or web cam. By combining your audio and video with your free VoIP Instant Messenger program, you will have a full quality experience. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the technology of taking audio and transmitting it as data over the Internet. Traditional telephone lines use Circuit Switching, like switchboard operators, which is an electric current. VoIP uses Packet Switching that converts audio into data packets and transfers them over the Internet.

Firstly, let’s look at the ‘Free’ way of taking VoIP for a test drive. So what’s a ‘Softphone’ I hear you ask? A ‘Softphone’ is merely a ‘Software’ ‘Phone’ that enables you to use your computer like you would a telephone. Softphones are programs that generally resemble the keypad on a telephone and function in much the same way. If you’d like to try VoIP by calling conventional telephones, consider PC to Phone VoIP. Depending on the Service Provider you choose and the destination country you’re calling, the cost could be as little as just a few cents per minute. As long as you purchase ‘pre-paid’ calling credit, you won’t need to enter into a contract of any kind and can use that credit to call any telephone around the world.

Instead of connecting your phone to the wall, you connect it to a box either the VOIP company provides or you buy on your own. This is the modem. You need highspeed/broadband internet for this. Your modem plugs into your cable/dsl modem and now it can ‘talk’ btwn your phone and the internet.

The voice signal converts to data packets and travels across the internet through a VoIP platform, and then converts back to voice at the receiving end of the communication exchange. Leading telecom experts are projecting that 75% of the world’s communications will be done on VoIP within the next several years. Typically a VoIP voice over ip phone not only has audio capabilities, but also three-way calling, text messaging, and contacts list. Some VoIPs even have webcam capabilities. In addition, there is usually a button to click that can indicate to others when you are available, unavailable, away, or off line. Most reputable VoIP computer phone providers limit PC to PC calls among their own subscribers for privacy purposes so that the quality of sound is not compromised. Most reputable VoIP voice over ip phone providers have their own patented technology.

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Dish’s Sling TV can now be streamed on Google’s Nexus Player and other devices shipping with Android TV. We first saw the internet TV service running on the Nexus Player back at CES, but clearly it’s taken some time for Dish and Google to actually launch the app. Sling TV is already available on a slew of devices including iOS, Android, Xbox One, Roku, Fire TV, PC, and OS X. The over-the-top internet subscription service costs $ 20 per month for a base package of TV channels that includes ESPN, AMC, the Disney Channel, CNN, TBS, TNT, History Channel, and more. Extra channel bundles can be added on for $ 5 each, and Sling also now offers HBO subscriptions for a monthly fee of $ 15.

It"s all about online gaming in this new teaser for Halt and Catch Fire

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Last year AMC unleashed the first season of Halt and Catch Fire, a fascinating character study that took place against the backdrop of the 1980s PC revolution (yes, I was a fan). Given the tumultuous ending co-creators Christopher Cantwell and Christopher Rogers crafted last time around, the show could have gone anywhere — and for the second season it’s headed straight to 1985. While in the first season the focus was primarily on the Jobs-and-Woz style partnership between Lee Pace and Scoot McNairy’s characters, this time it appears to be squarely on the show’s female leads: Mackenzie Davis as the punk rock programmer Cameron, and Kerry Bishé as engineering guru Donna.

Pairing Cameron’s chaotic genius with Donna’s pragmatic problem…

Microsoft kills off Windows Media Center

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Microsoft stopped actively developing Windows Media Center in 2009, but the company still shipped an unmodified version in an upgrade pack for Windows 8. The software giant is planning to kill off Media Center in Windows 10, meaning any PCs upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 will lose the feature. Microsoft confirmed the plan to ZDNet’s Ed Bott in a recent interview.

It’s not a surprise move, but Windows Media Center has a passionate and loyal following which will undoubtedly mourn the loss of the feature. Microsoft first introduced Windows Media Center in 2001 as a separate Windows XP version. It was designed to run fullscreen as a media player, and support television channels from TV tuners. A number of PC makers created dedicated…
