Uber Ruling Is A Harbinger Of The Need For Employment Law Change

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

uber1099 The recent ruling by a hearing officer with the California Labor Commission in a case involving an Uber driver is bad public policy. The issue this ruling addresses — whether the driver should be classified as an “employee” or “contractor” — is of crucial importance to Uber and all the on-demand companies that use a similar business model. Don"t blame migrants – the West helped to create their plight

Dictatorships and one-party rule, profligacy and greed, have despoiled potentially productive nations, turning them into hopeless, dependent, unsustainable entities. But the case against old European imperialists is strong and indubitable. Theresa May …

Google"s adorable self-driving cars are now on public roads

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Google announced last month that it’d be putting its prototype self-driving cars on California roads this summer, and now they’re here. When they were first announced last year, the cars were shown without any driver controls at all, but these are a bit different — there will still be a qualified driver and manual override controls available at all times, just in case a car gets out of its element. (Data so far suggests the challenge might be with self-driving cars being too safe, not the other way around.) In this way, the cars are similar to the many self-driving Lexus SUVs that Google already has driving on and around its Mountain View campus.

Porsche wins 24 Hours of Le Mans, ending Audi"s five-year winning streak

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Porsche has just unseated Audi atop the endurance racing throne. Well, for a year at least. The #19 Porsche 919 Hybrid won the 24 Hours of Le Mans today, ending Audi’s streak of five consecutive wins at the legendary endurance race in France. Audi has completely dominated the race for years, with an Audi vehicle winning thirteen of the last fifteen races. But Porsche, now with a record 17 wins at Le Mans, returned to the sport just last year, and it came home with the checkered flag this time, the 83rd running of the race. Porsche last won in 1998.

The #19 Porsche crossed the line with German Formula One driver Nico Hulkenberg at the wheel. British driver Nick Tandy and New Zealand’s Earl Bamber joined him for the race win. The #17…

Apptentive Study Finds When It Comes To Mobile Apps, Ratings And Reviews Are Currency

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) May 05, 2015

Apptentive, the mobile customer communication solution for enterprise apps, is pleased to announce the release of its newest research report, The Mobile Marketer’s Guide to App Store Ratings and Reviews.

Ratings and reviews are integral to a mobile app’s success, yet historically it has been hard to quantify their importance and justify an investment in app store optimization. This eBook provides brand new data collected from Apptentive’s 2015 Consumer Survey, paired with data from working with thousands of leading mobile apps, to paint the most comprehensive picture yet of app store ratings and reviews.

Key findings:

<> 92% of consumers indicated that star ratings influenced their evaluation of an app, and 75% identified reviews as a key driver of app downloads.

<> Only 15% of consumers will consider downloading an app with a 2-star rating, 50% will consider downloading a 3-star app, and 96% will consider downloading a 4-star app.

<> Reviews are almost three times as influential for paid apps as they are for free apps, with consumers placing a greater amount of importance on testimonials for paid apps.

“It is undeniable that ratings and reviews matter to the digital consumer. For companies making apps, having anything less than a 4-star rating is costing them customers and revenue,” said Robi Ganguly, CEO and co-founder at Apptentive. “Providing alternative channels for feedback and managing the inevitable negative review in a way that earns customer loyalty and trust are just a few of the strategies outlined in the report that app marketers can use to boost their app store ratings, reviews, and rankings. Our work with thousands of companies tells us that this is a revenue issue, one that every CMO should be focused on managing.”

The full eBook is available for free download here.

Feds can charge you with obstruction of justice for clearing your browser history

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

In the early 2000s, former US Congressmen Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) and Michael Oxley (R-OH) crafted a bill that would put pressure on corporations to comply with federal prosecutors during investigations. It was largely a response to 2001’s Enron scandal, when the energy company was able to hid billions of dollars in debt due to corporate loopholes and a little creative accounting. The bill, known as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, was signed into law by President Bush in 2002.

It could carry up to a 20-year sentence

Since then, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act has subtly provided the legal groundwork for prosecuting people for something like deleting their browser history. One such case is that of Khairullozhon Matanov, a 24-year-old former cab driver who…

IndyCar shakes up tradition with built-in LEDs that show race position

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

“The greatest spectacle in racing” is getting a futuristic face lift this year. In addition to a brand new aero package, the high-speed machines of IndyCar will feature LED panels that display each driver’s positioning at this year’s Indy 500.

Even though many tracks feature multiple scoring towers and scoreboards, fans aren’t guaranteed to have a clear view of them, and at street or road courses there’s no view of the entire course. That can make it difficult to make out which driver is where in the standings, especially when the race leaders are running in lapped traffic.

“The greatest spectacle in racing” will have a new look

The new panels will mitigate that problem, even if the somewhat garish look is sure to send shivers down the…

Mini Augmented Vision concept brings crazy-looking AR glasses inside the car

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

At the Shanghai auto show later this month, BMW subsidiary Mini will show off its Mini Augmented Vision concept, specialized eyewear that projects a bunch of relevant information into the driver’s view. According to the press release, the list of functions is pretty long: users can see navigation data, speed, speed limits, points of interest as they pass by, messaging alerts from a connected phone, and “augmented parking” — a camera on the far-side mirror projects its view into the driver’s goggles, making finding the curb easier.

But the craziest concept might be “X-Ray View,” which makes solid parts of the car around the driver effectively transparent so you can see obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles around you that would…

The Range Rover SV Autobiography is a ridiculously expensive tailgating SUV

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

“It looks expensive because it is expensive.”

That’s how Jaguar Land Rover succinctly described its new Range Rover SV Autobiography, as if to say the price itself was a major selling point. The luxury SUV, which debuted today at the New York International Auto Show, is one of the most expensive in the world — “from $ 199,495″ to be exact, which gets you a 5.0-liter V8 engine.

But the SV Autobiography is less about the driver and more about everyone else in the car. The interior is stocked with monitors and deployable tables, a chiller compartment, and “deep twist pile mohair carpet mats.” And then there’s the “Event Seating… hand crafted from beautiful Windsor leather” (according to the press release). Unfortunately, Land Rover was…

Uber will reportedly pay for commercial driver"s licenses to avoid German ban

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Uber is no stranger to legal battles, but the tough-negotiating startup appears to be making a rare concession in Germany. The ride-sharing company will pay the government fees for its drivers in the country to obtain commercial driver’s licenses, according to a report in German business magazine Wirtschafts Woche. Uber’s German chief, Fabien Nestmann, was quoted saying that the company will pay the €100 to €200 cost for a license. He added, “We will also pay the €150 to €200 it would cost our partners to have the Chamber of Commerce license them as taxi companies.”

The news comes just over a week after a Frankfurt district court banned the company’s low-cost Uberpop service across the country. The court ruled that, per German law,…

Benefits Of An Auto Club Membership

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

There is nothing like a northern winter to make people enjoy their vehicles just a bit more. Canadian winters are known to be some of the harshest, though the northern states of the U. S. Aren’t far off. With blowing snow and cutting cold temperatures, thinking of getting an auto club membership makes more sense. A single membership can save a driver so much trouble and offer protection in those situations everyone wants to avoid.

Many memberships for auto clubs have similar benefits. Some offer exclusive benefits, however, that cost an extra yearly fee. And many auto clubs are merely offshoots of a brand name, such as a gasoline company or a popular auto mechanic. To find the right membership, compare the lists of benefits and costs involved for each.

Usually a membership will include winching and extrication of a vehicle as well as towing. Towing means that a tow truck will come to where a car is and move it with little or no cost. Extrication and winching are different. Many times people overestimate what their vehicles can do and drive through mud or sand, only to find themselves stuck. A winching service on a membership really helps.

Most Canadians have experienced trying to start a car and finding the engine simply won’t turn over because of the cold weather. Surprisingly many people in some provinces don’t yet know to plug their car in at night on the coldest nights of the winter. So, many auto club memberships offer a battery boosting service. A tow truck will come to the member’s home or even to the side of a deserted road to help get a battery going with a boost.

Roadside service is a crucial thing to look for in an auto club membership. Having a tow truck come and offer a cold car a boost is often essential as a benefit to membership. Many tow truck companies will offer a cheap battery to replace one that just won’t work, all as part of the auto club. Being able to call someone to help fix a car quickly so the member can get going again really makes a difference during a hard situation.

Having a membership in a car club is also helpful for family members too. Imagine what it would be like to be a new driver or a teenager, out visiting friends or family when the car dies on a deserted road. Imagine that the only person they had to call was a local towing company with a driver that seems less than respectable. Having a membership in a club ensures that someone with professional experience and accredited skills will come to them, where they are, no matter what time of day or night it is.

Sometimes people hear about things like flat tires or running out of gas, and think that might never happen to them. The point of any kind of insurance as well as a membership in a car club is for the eventuality of such things happening. Running out of gas isn’t just embarrassing, in the winter in Canada it can be downright deadly. Having a flat tire can also be dangerous. Knowing that a tow truck is going to come to one’s aid in situations like this makes a driver lost in the middle of nowhere less frustrated and panicked. And that’s important when it comes to surviving a cold Canadian winter.

It’s common that even in Canada, during the winter seasons, people climb into their warm and toasty vehicles without jackets on, thinking they’ll be just fine. In most cases they are, but in some rare instances on the commute to work in the big city or while going to visit someone, something goes wrong with the car. Having an auto club membership means that if things get bad, someone will be there to keep them from getting worse. And when the snow is blowing, the roads are icy and the weather terrible, that can happen very quickly.

Serving over 5 million members with our dedicated auto club membership, we make your travelling experience as enjoyable as possible. Plan your perfect travel getaway with little hassle through these value-adding Disney Theme Park tickets.
