If you are traveling on the road and someone cuts you off, the improper thing to do would to be to allow yourself to get so angry that you feel compelled to cut that same person off. Instead of antagonizing the other driver, simply back off of their vehicle, thereby putting a little distance in between the two of you. If you still feel pretty irked, you may want to pull off the side of the road and take a couple of deep breaths.

 

When you’re sitting in your vehicle and are driving around, try to make sure that your driving environment is in the free and clear. What does this mean? It simply means that you should rid yourself of any and all distractions. This can include things such as children kicking the back of the driver’s seat, turning off cell phones (or making sure that you don’t answer them while driving without the use of a hands-free device. Additionally, while you are likely to drive around friends and family, try to make it known that you would appreciate it if everyone kept their voices down while they chit-chatted. You’d be surprised to find out how many people get involved in accidents all due to the fact that they’re too focused on the conversation and not enough on the road. When driving in traffic (especially during the rush hours), always give yourself a two-second gap between the car in front of you. There are several good reasons for this. First, it allows you more braking time should the cars ahead need it. Secondly, if the traffic is stopped in one lane or if the person in front of you has their car stall out, you may want to change over to a different lane. Leaving yourself the gap will help you in this endeavor.

 

Another thing to keep in mind is weather. Safe driving is even more important when the weather isn’t great. For instance, when it is raining outside, always make sure that your headlights are turned on. Even if it is only drizzling, as long as you are using your windshield wipers, the law dictates that you are supposed to have your lights on. Additionally, in some rainy weather when the rain is especially heavy, having your lights on can aid other drivers in being able to see you and vice versa.

 

My mother has a rule when we are in her car. She will not leave the parked position until everyone has their seat belts on. Always make sure you have your seat belt on and buckled properly. Also, for those of you who like to fill your car with all sorts of goodies, always make sure that you leave a clear back window to see through so that your view is not obstructed in any way.
