Known well for their reputation as a premium sea kayaking company on the British Columbia coast, Spirit of the West offers guests the opportunity to kayak with Orca whales while enjoying all of the luxury of “glamping” – glamorous camping. Guests are treated to wildlife interpretation from enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides as they paddle the silent and tranquil waters of Johnstone Strait, the Broughton Archipelago, Desolation Sound and the Nuchatlitz. Returning back to camp from a day of sea kayaking Vancouver Island, guests are welcomed by the delectable scents of home cooking – and many are intrigued by the simple yet mouthwatering camping recipes that the company uses to entice guests back time and time again.
This month the company will be releasing their first ever cookbook – a compilation of their most popular treats and dishes found on tour. With recipes covering their breakfast menu, fresh home baking, simple appetizers and delicious dinner mains, guests will already be hard pressed to find an excuse not the buy the book.
However, as an added incentive for potential customers, all of the proceeds are being donated to sustainable tourism initiatives. In purchasing the book, customers are supporting a company that is determined to bridge the gap in the communication between stakeholders involved in environmental issues affecting the beautiful British Columbia coast. Highlighted in their green ethics on their own website, Spirit of the West claims that they, “[aim] to raise the bar in terms of environmental commitment and sustainability in the eco-tourism industry. [They] are not looking for a pat on the back for [their] efforts, but [they] hope to set new standards that encourage other tourism/business providers to also clean up their organizations and become co-leaders in sustainable and environmentally sound practices.”
And this is not the company’s first involvement in such initiatives either. In 2011 alone the small sea kayaking company donated over $ 6000 to non-profit environmental groups including West Coat Environmental Law, the Save our Salmon Foundation, the Wilderness Tourism Association, The Mainland Enhancement of Salmonoid Species Society and The Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Interpretative Center Society.
In the coming month, the book will be available online to the general public at: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3345892. At $ 12.95 per book (plus HST and shipping and handling), the new cookbook is a practical and affordable medium for customers wanting to contribute to the company’s sustainability initiatives.
