Apple plans to increase iTunes Match limit to 100,000 songs

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

There are lots of cool new features in iOS 9 — including a bunch that Apple hasn’t even announced — and we’ve just found another to add to the list. iTunes Match subscribers will soon be able to store up to 100,000 songs in iCloud, up from the 25,000-song limit that’s been in place since the service first launched in 2011.

The news was revealed by Apple executive Eddy Cue on Twitter in response to a number of questions about how the company’s upcoming music streaming service, Apple Music, will integrate with iTunes Match. In addition to mentioning the new 100,000 song limit, which Apple plans to launch alongside iOS 9 later this year, Cue reiterated that all Apple Music subscriptions will essentially include iTunes Match.

Apple Music…

The sad, somewhat dizzying life of an iPhone through its own eyes

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Think of all the things you do with your smartphone on any given day. You wake up and scroll through Twitter, you shove it into your pocket, you use its camera to make sure there’s nothing on your face before a big date, you let it sit on the table as you eat dinner, you hold it up to your ear to make a phone call, and you take selfies. A lot of selfies. If you think about it, it’s probably not that much fun to be a smartphone.

The video, created by New York-based artist Paul Trillo, highlights one day in the life of one iPhone, filmed from the phone’s perspective. As expected, there’s a lot of finger-tapping on the iPhone’s face, dizzying views from around waist-high, and shots of the iPhone’s owner from odd angles. At the end of the…

Rian Johnson uses the power of Darth Vader and Freddie Mercury to shut down a Twitter troll

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Today was a big day. The US Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal nationwide, and most people were very happy about it. But whenever something groundbreaking happens, there will inevitably be a few loud-mouthed dissenters, and they often congregate in one place: Twitter. Today, director Rian Johnson had to deal with one of those trolls, and his response was as close to perfect as a wordless reaction can be.

First, Johnson, who’s slated to write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII, reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision by tweeting an image of Darth Vader waving a rainbow pride flag. Then, Charley Davis, a man who describes himself in his Twitter bio as “The Fightin’est Illini, an Architect, a puppy wrangler, a walking paradoxical…

You can now watch Periscope replays on the web

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Since live streams began taking over Twitter feeds earlier this year, a common complaint has been that they end before you could watch them. Periscope did enable replays within 24 hours after a stream ended, but only on its apps for Android and iOS. That changes today with the launch of web replays. Just click a link to a Periscope stream, and once the page opens in your browser, you can hit the play button to re-live the stream.

Instagram wants to be part of the world’s conversations with its new search and explore tools

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Instagram has never really found the right mix of content to make its “explore” section feel like a vital and useful part of the app — but that might change today as Instagram 7.0 rolls out for iOS and Android. The focus of the update is a brand-new explore and and a search update that make Instagram feel even more like a competitor to Twitter than ever before. The main explore view will now surface trending tags instead of simply showing a grid of photos. Tapping on one of those trending hashtags will show you the most popular images up top, followed by a grid of all the most recent images submitted with a particular tag.

Trending places will also get their own dedicated part of the explore section, and Instagram’s search feature has…

Sick of P&L Statements, Literary Editor Quits, Gets Web Kudos

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Sarah Knight was sick of commuting, P&L statements and eating salad at her desk at Simon & Schuster, so she quit to freelance and seek happiness.

By Edward Nawotka

Today was my last day as a senior editor at a major publishing company, a little over five years after starting in this particular job and fifteen years into a career I once thought I wanted more than anything else.

As it turns out, what I really want more than anything else is to be happy.

So writes Sarah Knight earlier this month at Medium — a story which trended to the top of the site.

Sarah Knight

Sarah Knight

A former acquiring editor who has worked for companies including Macmillan and, most recently, at Simon & Schuster, Knight worked on titles from a variety of bestsellers, including James Lee Burke, Chris Cleave, Jeffery Deaver, Gillian Flynn, and Stephen Hunter, among others.

On Medium, she explained a bit further:

Today, as a fifteen-year veteran of the publishing industry, I can say that I have left jobs for better jobs and to claw my way up the corporate ladder, but I never, ever quit anything again just for the sake of happiness.

Until now.

I quit my job today.

I quit because I felt trapped.

I quit because life is getting shorter every day.

I quit because I fucking hate riding the subway twice a day during commuting hours.

But mostly I quit because I was really, really unhappy.

Look, it wasn’t all bad. I had a supportive boss and smart colleagues and the freedom to work on truly excellent books; but over time I realized that the business of publishing wasn’t perfectly conducive to the business of “me remaining sane.”

So . . . I quit.

She notes on her own site that she also quit because she “wanted to be free to put one hundred percent of my time, energy, and focus into working with writers—and spend less of it in meetings, running profit & loss statements, and eating overpriced chopped salads at my desk when instead I could be happily working from home or abroad.”

What’s interesting to note is not her discontent (who hasn’t felt a similar frustration) or even her decision, but the dozen’s of comments from the web (which largely amount to “Congratulations!” including one from a former ICM literary agent Kate Lee, now an editor at Medium) as well as her own Twitter feed, which counted down the days.

She like so many editors before her has gone into offering freelance author services. Which begs the question: will we all be freelancers in the future? (For the answer, wait for our forthcoming Global Overview print magazine coming laster this month).

Twitter wants you to shop on its new dedicated ‘product pages’

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Twitter is continuing to experiment with commerce. The company has started rolling out product and place pages that allows users to discover and purchase items within the service, Twitter said in a blog post Friday.

The new pages will organize related tweets about products and brands on dedicated pages. If you look at a product page, you’ll see other users’ tweets about that product, prices, and, sometimes, a buy button. As you can see in the image below, if you were to look at the publishing company Penguin Random House’s Twitter profile, you could redirect to a product page for Andy Weir’s novel The Martian. You could then read what other people were tweeting about the book, and decide if you wanted to buy it, which you could do…

Snoop Dogg For CEO Of Twitter

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

snoop dogg Snoop Dogg should become CEO of Twitter and I’m about to tell you why. But first, leave Dick Costolo, the outgoing CEO, alone. When Dick became CEO, Twitter was valued at about $ 3 billion (now it’s $ 26 billion). The site was constantly overloaded with traffic and would crash. Now it doesn’t crash. Twitter had 30 million active users a month and now has over 250 million… Read More
