Donald Trump"s Loss Of Greatness

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

In recent weeks Donald Trump has lost his greatness. People already knew him as a great personality, real estate developer, and showman. He had a chance to become more, to step beyond his ego, to become a visionary, a leader, someone to inspire the people to become great like him. Unfortunately he decided to step in the realm of ignorance, hate, bigotry and fear. He has decided to promote lies and hateful propaganda for ratings.

This country needs people to step into their greatness. To show others how to rise above the pain and fear to be more. Oprah Winfrey is an example of someone who has shown others how to become more. She does this with her TV shows, magazines, and contributions. She used celebrity not only to make herself wealthy but to create change in a positive way.

Donald Trump has decided to go the other direction – to use his celebrity and wealth to create fear and hate. He has chosen to slip on a mask of lies, and in doing so gave up the chance to be great; to use his name, is vision, his power for something other than the glorification of himself.

Most of us live our lives day by day. We try to be good and to do the right things, feed our family, and to show our children how to be in this life. But every now and again we have an opportunity to step into our greatness, to be more, to do more than just for ourselves or our families. We have the chance to touch lives beyond lives. Donald Trump has had many opportunities to step into greatness to change the nature of the world. Not only to provide wealth for his children and grandchildren but to provide a better future and vision for the world around him.

In deciding to place a mask of lies around him, he decided to be less. He decided to be a common politician. To be just common. The sad part is that with so many opportunities he has decided not to take the challenge of greatness. He has chosen the safe route. Still, we must honor Donald’s choice to be less. He will always have a good life, but he missed the opportunity to make our lives better, and that deserves pity.

Just as Donald had his chance to be great and walked away from it, we will have our own chances to step in to our own personal greatness; to be more than we are now, to provide vision for those around us, to be able to say to our children and our grandchildren that we made the world a better place. We all have greatness inside of us. The hardest part is to recognize it, and to step into it when we have the opportunity. Sometimes the opportunities come in small baby steps. Sometimes the opportunities for greatness will happen all at once. A part of us must always be on the lookout for these opportunities to be great, to act great.

At the end of the day the question is simple. Do we want to be less than who we could be? Do we want to be safe and do nothing? Or do we want to step in to greatness? We can be great not only for ourselves and our children, but more importantly for the world around us.

Book Review - The Hummer and the Mini by Robyn Waters

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Robyn Waters, former vice president of trend, design, and product development at Target, has written an easy to read, interesting book on trends and countertrends that are taking hold. The Hummer and the Mini is a book that demonstrates how every product that becomes the new rave such as the Hummer, has a counter product which is designed to be exactly the opposite, like the Mini Cooper. The Hummer is known as a large, luxurious, excessive vehicle that eats up gas and is awful for the environment. At the same time, the Mini Cooper, which is just as popular in the opposite way, is known for its great gas mileage, speed and style, and not being awful for the environment.

Waters applies her ideas of the Hummer vs. the Mini Cooper to all types of products and services available to people everywhere. The book is broken down into ten chapters, all covering a different sector of products which have trends and countertrends. There are dozens of examples in every chapter, and in this review I will give a brief summary of some of the most interesting examples.

In the beginning of her book, Waters explains how she personally spotted trends and countertrends while working at Target. She describes how people love to buy expensive clothes, but at the same time will buy an expensive pair of jeans and wear a five dollar t-shirt with those jeans. While the expensive jeans may be the new trend, you could describe the cheap shirt as a countertrend. At the same time, while Sony PlayStation is a huge seller these days, board games have made a comeback. People are more conscious about video games frying your brain, so they play board games to use their brains more effectively.

Another example Robyn Waters gives in her book is how modern, ultra-expensive furniture from the finest stores are very popular, but so is really cheap, worn-looking furniture. While the expensive items are nice to own and show that one has money, some people feel that buying a dresser or table at the thrift store and giving it some TLC means more and looks better in the end.

Waters also discusses how people love to buy items that are widely available to everyone in the same model including cars, homes, televisions, etc. But counter examples exist as well where the product is highly customizable. Examples include the Scion XB, where the consumer can decide what color paint, interior lights, and other interior options he/she desires. The consumer must wait a little longer than the average person to get their car due to the customization, but everyone agrees its well worth the wait. Other customizable options include the iPod, Nike shoes, and Lands’ End pants. Consumers can choose what color and size iPod they want, can design the color and lettering on their Nike shoes, and custom fit Lands’ End pants. When someone can make an item their own, they are more likely to buy it and enjoy it more than an item that everyone else has.

Another section of Waters’ book deals with companies that produce luxury items which previously did not have a market. One example is the In-N-Out Burger chain. Here, operators and managers do not use freezers, they make food when you order it, hand cut their fries, and the milk shakes are created using real ice cream. For these reasons, the In-N-Out Burger chain has some of the best rated food and happiest fast food customers in the world. Waters then mentions Airstream’s Sky Deck, a high-class RV which includes a rooftop deck and lounge, wet bar, barbeque, entertainment center, and fancy umbrellas. Companies like Airstream target the population of the world who expect more and want to know that they are getting the best, and are making huge profits as a result.

The trend versus countertrend idea also applies to technology being very complex versus very simple. People who own phones today probably have the ability to text message, surf the internet, take pictures and videos, and use thousands of applications with the touch of a screen. All of the various buttons and applications only cause problems for the elderly and those who grew up with the idea that “simple is better”. For this reason, companies like Vodafone produce phones for the non-technological savvy where only the essential buttons are included on the phone. Buyers get a phone with a basic key pad, the ability to text message, and that’s about it. Life does not have to be so complex and technical, and basic phones and other appliances are catching on quickly with certain groups of people.

One of the more interesting topics in the book is how people pay good money for healthy products. An example of a higher-priced but high-demand product is 3 Vodka. This vodka is made from soy, and is the first time ever that soy has been distilled into alcohol. With such a unique product, a unique package is needed, and 3 Vodka does not disappoint. Their bottle is very eye-catching, has a huge 3 across the bottle, and has a cap that doubles as a half-shot glass. Also, spas have popped up all over the country and women and men will pay hundreds of dollars per hour to get pampered. At the same time, while spas are mainly aimed at adults, they are now being built for kids as well. Adults can go get a massage and manicure or pedicure while the little kids are getting their own manicures or pedicures and hair styling.

Robyn Waters’ book provides you with a new aspect of the world around you related to products and trends. Personally, I never related the Hummer to the Mini Cooper and how many items are the exact opposite of other products which have caught on with the public and sold very well. Waters does a great job of covering ten or so markets and explaining dozens of trend and countertrend examples within each market. This book can be read in a couple of days and is useful for people who are developing products, are interested in current trends, or want to start a new business with an innovative product. I rate this book a 4 out of 5.

Donald delight at fast start

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

If Luke Donald came away from Thursday’s first round of the Tour Championship with a smile on his face, it was with good reason.

He had reversed his miserable start at last week’s BMW Championship, shrugged away a late downpour and lightning delay and had come out fast with all guns blazing to get among the front runners from the word go.

The World No 1 shot a 4-under par 66 by Mizuno Men’s JPX-800 Pro Irons that put him in a second place tie with Chez Reavie and Jason Duffner, just two shots behind first round leader Keegan Bradley and greatly upped his chances of winning both the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup’s multi-million bonanza.

“Certainly I wanted to get off to a quicker start really, than I had in Chicago,” said a delighted Donald after firing five birdies and a bogey on Atlanta’s storied East Lake Golf Course where legendary Bobby Jones cut his golfing teeth.

Last week, Donald opened with a 75 in the BMW Championship at Cog Hill and had to fight furiously to make his way back into fourth place by Sunday.

“As much as it pleased me to rebound after that tough start, it really made it very tough for me to have any chance to win so I didn’t want to find myself in the same position here,” the 33-year-old Englishman told the media at East Lake.

“I wanted to get off to a much faster start and put myself in better position. I’m glad I did that.”

Donald has still to win a major – and will have to wait for next year to focus on that goal. In the meantime, however, he has at least three goals in his sights this week.

For along with winning the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup, he is also one of the half-dozen or so contenders vying for the US PGA Tour Player of the Year honours.

“There are a lot of things that go along with winning this week, both for me and a few of the other guys,” Donald said.

“I’m sure there’s a little bit of added pressure. That’s why I was kind of proud of the way I played Mizuno Men’s JPX-800 Pro Ironstoday.”

Donald was fourth in the points standings coming into this week and should he triumph at East Lake Golf Club on Sunday, he would also win the prestigious FedExCup.

However the same applies to the other four players ranked in the top five – fellow Brit Justin Rose and Americans Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar.

“I’m very happy with the way I played Mizuno Men’s JPX-800 Pro Ironstoday, I felt like I was in control of the golf ball and really did a good job with my round,” said Donald, who had to wait 30 minutes before playing the final hole due to the threat of lightning.

“I played Mizuno Men’s JPX-800 Pro Ironssolidly, didn’t make too many mistakes. It’s always a good sign that my swing is in good positions. I’m hitting the ball pretty far, another good sign.”

Donald means business

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

World No 1 Luke Donald showed his rivals he means business in the FedEx Cup by whisking up his best opening round of the year inBostonon Friday.

Playing in the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston, the US-based Englishman shot a 5-under par 66 to finish just one shot off the lead secured by American Troy Matteson.

He is tied for second with South African No 1 Charl Schwartzel, the reigning Masters champion, Korean YE Yang, the 2009 PGA Champion, and the in-form US veteran Jerry Kelly.

Entering this week’s event, the second of the PGA Tour’s four lucrative playoff events, Donald occupies fifth spot in the overall standings and trails FedExCup leader Dustin Johnson by 1,583 points.

The long-hitting Johnson also made a good start on Friday and was just three shots off the pace in a large group that included recently crowned PGA Championship Keegan Bradley, after carding a three-under 68.

In the meantime, Donald, who lost only one shot in a round that included six birdies, seemed to be hugely encouraged by his performance with Mizuno JPX 800 Irons.

He told Sky Sports 3: “Sometimes I’ve not played that great in the first round and I’ve been having to play catch-up so it’s nice to post five under. I’m in a great position.

“The last month or so I haven’t short-gamed it well enough – I haven’t made those putts when I needed to. Today I did. That was really the difference between five under and maybe two under and being back in the pack.

“There’s a little bit more urgency to do well and win because it is the play-offs and with the points being so much more there’s a lot of value in winning.

“Winning goes a long way – it’ll set you up great for the Tour Championship and that’s always the goal inn this championship.”

Matteson started on the 10th and made a shaky start with a bogey five, but that was to be his only dropped shot of the round, his seven birdies that followed, spearheading his charge into the first round lead of an event that will traditionally end on Labour Day Monday.

He began this week in a precarious 97th place in the FedExCup standings knowing well that he desperately needed to perform at his best in Boston this week for only the leading 70 players after the Deutsche Bank Championship move on to the BMW Championship at Cog Hill before the top 30 eventually qualify for the Tour Championship finale at East Lake.

“Obviously where I’m at,” he said, “if I don’t play well, I’m not going to play Mizuno JPX 800 Ironsnext week.”

Schwartzel and Yang picked up six birdies apiece, their only blemishes each coming at the par-four fifth, while the highlight of Kelly’s round came with an eagle on the par-five 18th, the American having started on the back nine.

Australia’s Jason Day, who had two seconds in the Majors this year, was notably lurking amid a cluster of players two shots off the pace after signing for a 67.

Four-time major winner Phil Mickelson posted a solid 70 after using his new Mizuno JPX 800 Irons in tournament play for the first time. Notably left him smiling.

“I got off to a great start with it and I thought it went well,” the world’s No 1 left-hander said in the opening round.

Northern Ireland’s 2011 US Open champion Graeme McDowell had an up and down day, his three bogeys and three birdies leaving him trailing by all of six shots at level par.
