Writing may be a passion that comes directly from the heart. One thing to remember is how difficult entering publishing may be, especially since the profit of the publisher is far more important than that of the writer.
Getting your manuscript to a publisher for publishing can be very difficult. This is especially difficult for writers who choose a genre that is already saturated. Simply having a good manuscript doesn’t mean you will be accepted, considering the number of submissions of the same type of book a publishing company receives. The publishers will always choose the one that will gain them the most profit. For publishers to survive the tough business, they must choose the one that has the most potential. Most of the time, it’s this direct line for profit that deviates from seeing the truly great work.
There are many cases where an author will be rejected by dozens of publishers. The only way these writers will make it is by being persistent and beliving in their work. They became best sellers.
There are even some cases where the publishers are quite rude about their rejections. Have you ever seen the classic teen horror movie Carrie? This movie is based on a Stephen King novel. That novel became massively successful when it was published. A blockbuster movie and even a remake of it were created. This wouldn’t have been the case had Stephen King not persisted with his work, especially after having different publishers reject it.
Another really good story on rejected but successful novels is Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone by J.K Rowling. Belive it or not, the famed novel was actually rejected by dozens of publishers. Some of the top publishing companies like Harper Collins, Bloomsbury and Penguin rejected the idea of children wanting to read long novels.
It happened to many famous authors and the same can happen to you. These authors must have some very thick skin to move forward after so much rejection. Or they may have also just given up on finding a publisher and published their own work.
It takes real dedication to be an author. Writing is solitary work that needs discipline and love. Not everybody can work like that. But most importantly, a working author has to believe enough in their work to deserve publishing and thick skin to find a publisher.
