White is a big fashion story for this season and a great look for making a first impression. As temperatures rise, crisp whites will be keeping us cool this summer. White, often thought of as a clean colour was a constant feature on the catwalks for this season. But rather than using it as a cold, clinical colour the designers are using soft-luxe clean lines to convey a luxurious, stylish, high maintenance look. From pared-down sheath styles at Calvin Klein to Dolce and Gabbana’s pretty broderie anglaise mixed with crystal and lace there’s something for almost everyone this season in white.
Many people will perhaps be a bit sceptical of the whole white look but here a personal stylist explains about how to go about wearing white this season.
What rules should you follow?
White will be smart and chic this season rather than the creased white linen look of the last decade. The two main silhouettes are sophisticated body-con or slightly more flared and flirty. Grown up pieces can be mixed with younger, sporty items, for example a short, pleated skirt with a single breasted crisp blazer. Every piece needn’t be new and you can use a classic white shirt from your wardrobe.
You may think that white is too boring to make a great first impression. Well, far from it. Of course you can use white pieces with brights or florals this season but head-to-toe white is definitely a high impact look. To make your white look more interesting, use different textures and weights of fabrics. Cotton, lace, satin and silk blends, see-through and opaque fabrics will all be popular.
What accessories should you use?
For maximum impact make sure all your accessories are white as well as your outfit. There will be plenty of white plastic-framed sunglasses and straw hats available on the high street for extra glamour. A heavy black bag or pair of sandals will wreck the look so invest in white versions of these also.
Will white drain my colouring?
Bright white throughout can be draining, especially if your colouring is very warm. To avoid the look becoming too stark, use a variety of white tones such as soft white, ivories and creams. A small amount of gold or nude shades can also be worn in accessories to warm the look.
How to wear make-up to go with white
To complete the all-white look this season, the make-up needs to be very fresh and natural. The skin should look flawless and glowing so use a skin adjuster to conceal any blemishes. Invest in an illuminating foundation and powder or bronzer. Keep the lip colour nude and ensure eye make-up looks minimal.
Who should avoid white?
So should everybody wear white? Absolutely not. Mums with toddlers shouldn’t even contemplate it at the moment unless it’s for a special occasion when the children won’t be going with them. Anyone who is conscious of carrying a little extra weight probably won’t feel very comfortable in white. Darker colours do make things look smaller and whilst larger women shouldn’t always be hiding in black, they should only go for the white look if the outfit is very well cut and flattering to their bodies.
