The Barbados Tourism Encyclopedia (BTE) launches a campaign featuring Barbados Carnival as a world heritage event on its website Barbados.org. The BTE created one of the first web pages on the Carnival back in 1995 and soon added the Carnival Calendar and photo-gallery. In this latest initiative it has produced a Carnival Brochure (flyer), a mini site and a series of videos on the Caribbean Carnival event. A magazine is in the works.
“Carnival has been a big event in the Island since the days when Barbados was the world’s largest supplier of sugar. It started as an annual celebration to honor the end of the cane harvest called Crop-Over.” Says Kathy-Lynn Ward, who is the Chief Operating officer responsible for building and marketing the brand.
The Encyclopedia team was amongst the crowd taking in the ambiance and filming the Barbados Carnival Party. Several videos and photos were posted to http://barbados.org/barbados-jouvert-carnival-photos.htm , as a way to show the world the good time being had in this Caribbean nation.
“We want to share the joy of Kadooment, the Barbados Carnival street party, with the world,” says Ian Clayton, who was manning one of the cameras on location. “It’s a very relaxed and fun time. People of all sorts are on the street dancing and celebrating the Carnival. It’s a ritual that dates back hundreds of years and is part of the Barbados heritage.”
This year the Carnival Festival is particularly appropriate because UNESCO has declared Bridgetown, Barbados to be a World Heritage Site. The people, the history and the culture are being celebrated like never before and the annual Harvest festival with the grand finale party, Kadooment, is the biggest street party of the year.
The Crop Over fete or Kadooment is central to the annual event. Rum shops, beer and fruit stalls serve drinks and refreshment while all the big bands parade down the streets, bumping to their own beat. All sorts of Caribbean foods are served along the street: Curry, roti, Jamaica patties, Cou Cou, pastries, BBQ’s and more.
The 2012 Carnival in Barbados saw a wide range of costumes and music styles with calypso and soca getting the crowd jamming on the street. Barbados-born singer Rihanna has returned to her native country to join the festivities over the years. She adds some glamour and real “Bajan” moves to the celebration.
Often called “distinctively charming” Barbados tourism caters to the most elegant and avant-garde travelers, rock stars and celebrities. At the same time the island has affordable and tasteful bed and breakfasts and friendly folksy atmosphere that is utterly charming.
Ward pointed to Barbados.org as the launch point for anyone interested in visiting Barbados. The website has more than 100,000 pages of information, photos and videos on all aspects of tourism in the island. It is all organized with point and click menus so that it easy to find what you need quickly.
