1) The Difference in Myrtle Beach vs North Myrtle Beach
Myrtle and North Myrtle are actually two completely separate incorporated cities, each with their own set of attributes and attractions. You will typically find that North Myrtle Beach is a bit less busy than its big brother, meaning less traffic on Ocean Blvd and less congestion on major roads (although North Myrtle has its share of traffic as well!) North Myrtle is also home to some of the newer condo buildings overall, such as Crescent Keyes and Atlantic Breeze.
On the flip side, Myrtle Beach is more “happening” with more restaurants and bars, and more popular attractions overall. There are attractions within walking distances from the oceanfront condos and hotels, most popularly the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and the Ocean Blvd strip of shops, arcades and restaurants.

2) Comparing Rates: Look at the TOTAL price
It’s common practice for Myrtle Beach area rental companies to add additional fees during checkout, such as linen fees or surcharges. So when comparing rates from company A to company B, be sure to get to the final checkout page to find the total price, not just the “base rate.” You won’t find this as much with a hotel, but for vacation rental companies that offer oceanfront condos, it’s common practice.
3) Condo vs Hotel: A world of difference
Truth be told, there aren’t many oceanfront hotels in North Myrtle Beach or Myrtle Beach. Most are condominium complexes with 1 to 4 bedroom units, perfect for families. Condos feature quite a few upgrades compared to your standard hotels — oceanfront private balconies, washers and dryers in the unit and larger living areas and full kitchens with refrigerators and all appliances. They also feature full dining rooms, and most have en-suite bathrooms for each bedroom as well.
“Another positive note for condos is they are all individually owned by private homeowners, so each condo unit is decorated differently and has the owner’s personality included, making a vacation feel more like a home away from home, rather than a cookie cutter appearance,” said Paul Hanak, marketing director for CondoLux.
4) Book Now or Book Later?
The eternal question, should you book your vacation now and secure the property you really want, or should you wait and take a nice hefty discount close to your arrival date, but risk getting a less than top quality unit.
Note again that condos are invidially owned and decorated differently. Just like hotels, rental management companies discount their rental units at the last minute as well. However, the rooms vary quite a bit, unlike hotels.
“The best and nicest condos ALWAYS book first, sometimes 8-10 months in advance for the entire summer,” said Hanak. “When you wait until the last minute, you run into a smaller inventory of condos that may be less appealing.”
5) Oceanfront vs Ocean View: Saving Money
In Myrtle Beach terms, oceanfront unit balcony’s are directly parallel to the ocean and have no obstructions between you and the ocean. You are able to look up and down the beach with a beautiful view north and south.
Ocean view units on the other hand do still have a view of the ocean, however, the unit may be on the corner or side of the high-rise, so you are only getting a partial view of the ocean.
The difference is always in terms of price. If you are looking to save money, then an ocean view unit is the way to go, sometimes saving a few hundred dollars on the total rental rate. Make sure you view photos online of the actual unit though; this “category” is rather broad.
