Help by Helping

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

We are an empathetic race. We feel the pain of our brothers and sisters, and of our parents and children. We clearly have the ability to understand the needs of others, and to be emotionally moved by their plight. We know when people are in need, whether they live in our own household, our town, our county, or even somewhere else in the world. Why is it, then, that so few of us actually step up, and actually help by helping?

It’s a complex question with complex answers. First, we should all agree that this clearly doesn’t apply to everybody. There are many people in the world today whose primary focus is strictly on helping others. Their contributions are changing the world, and are easing the pain and suffering of many people. We should all be truly grateful for anyone who so willingly-and selflessly-gives of their time, talent and treasure.

But that doesn’t alter the fact that many of us remain on the sidelines, for a multitude of reasons. Probably the most egregious is laziness. Some people, while intellectually and emotionally acknowledging the misfortunes of others, just don’t seem to be capable of pulling themselves off of the couch, or out of the house to actually pitch in and help. They are at once sympathetic to the problem, and impotent to solving it. They are selfish.

Most people however, would help if they could, and that is precisely the problem. They lack the resources-time, talent or treasure-to pitch in, and help by helping. Bill Gates is today a philanthropist extraordinaire, who has donated billions of dollars to various global charities, as well as creating his own foundation, solely for the purpose of helping others. Clearly, as one of the world’s richest men, he has the financial resources to do so. But he’s had the money for quite some time. Fifteen years ago, he already had the money-not quite as much, but clearly enough-to make a difference. What he lacked then was time, because he was too busy running Microsoft to spend his days on charitable causes.

This is exactly the same predicament most people face. They want to help-but can’t. They are too busy working to volunteer for causes that need them. They are too strapped financially, living paycheck to paycheck, to be able to donate money to worthy causes. Or they are mentally unprepared, feeling that their efforts will be a mere drop in the bucket and won’t really change anything.

The reality is that everybody can help, and everyone should. If you lack the resources, find them, even if means launching an entirely new career. There are children and senior citizens that need your help. Once you have a career that offers a lucrative income and time freedom to do as you please, you will have everything in place. From medical help to financial help and everything in between, the world needs you-please help by helping.
