Create a Champion

Post from http://www.danieluk.net

Do you take care of the talented people in your organisation? Do you give them opportunities they can’t find anywhere else? Are you obsessed about findings and developing champions? If not, you need to take close hard look before it is too late. In order to be competitive today, you need all the champions you can get. You need to create a working environment that encourages and fosters people who have the potential to become champions. To find and develop champions is not about managing your employees’ careers. It is about providing opportunities for them to build and manage their own future. It is about creating a learning organisation that drives for results in a fun, flexible, yet organised way. If you provide this opportunity, your staff members will be much more inclined to support your organisation and produce the results you are looking for. They will support you because you believe in their talent. Remember that if you don’t take care of your champions, someone else will.

So who is a champions? A champion is a person who:

~Has that special talent;

~Has a passion for what he/she is doing;

~Has a positive attitude and is energetic;

~Inspires others to do things differently;

~Craves action and loves to get things done;

~Is flexible and curious;

~Wants to develop and improve himself;

~Focuses on results and has fun at the same time; and

~Has the potential to go far in the organisation.

Every company should define its own criteria for a champion. The above list should clarify what type of person an organisation should look for in an ideal work situation. Once your champion criteria, are defined, you should then evaluate your employees. Who has the potential of becoming a champion? Who are the real talented workers in your organisation? Who possesses that special drive needed for success? Once you have defined the potential champion, you should arrange a champion meeting. This is a private discussion between you and the selected person. During the coversation, you will explain the plans you have for the person and that you would like him to become a champion. Go through the expectations as well as the benefits and perks of being a champion. Create a vision and try to define a career path for the individual. To ensure a relaxed yet effective discussion, you should be well prepared for your champion. The structure of the meeting should cover future goals, actions and capacity.

Life long learning.
