The Cascading Style Sheets (or, CSS) is tool that allows you to control the layout of your design, while minimizing the many repetitive procedures that are part of the website design process. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are, essentially, documents or files that control the layout of your website’s design (with the “.css” file extension). What this does is create two things: One, it allows you to make changes in one file and have it applied throughout the entire site; and two, bring an element of consistency in all your webpages.

When making changes or updates, particularly on elements that are common through all your pages, it can be a tough and time-consuming process. Imagine having a 60-page website to update manually! What CSS does is allow you to access a page where that one common element is, change or edit it, apply and save the changes. What happens is, is that CSS then applies that saved changes you made on that single page and applies it to all the other 59 pages – isn’t that amazing?!

CSS also ensures a high level of consistency throughout your website. Standardization is very crucial, not just for larger and more commercial websites, but also for smaller, highly sophisticated and graphics-heavy sites. CSS ensures that any change made won’t compromise the integrity of the rest of the pages, and that your frames and styles won’t be skewed or affected by any change you’ve made.

But this doesn’t mean your ability to edit one single page is lost. There are two types of CSS sheets: The External and the Internal Cascading Style Sheets. An external CSS is what we’ve mentioned above, while the internal CSS is where you can make the necessary changes unique to that particular page.

What may look like weeks and months of hard work is easily accomplished with Cascading Style Sheets.
