In a documented first, using a decades young technology that combines geolocation, pattern recognition, and 3D animation to place animated characters in a real world environment, Petaluma, California-based Wiggle Planet introduces ‘Peck Peck’s Journey,’ an original application of “Augmented Reality” that allows characters in children’s illustrated books…to leave the page. The only equipment required? An active imagination…and an iPhone or iPad.

When a child opens ‘Peck Peck’s Journey,’ the story of a Wiglet who needs to find the way home, and points a smartphone or tablet at one of a dozen illustrated pictures in the story — Whoosh. Right before a child’s eyes a Wiglet appears on the page. But this is no case of canned animation. When a child reaches onto the page to touch the Wiglet, the Wiglet moves, follows a child’s hand, even flips, jumps and dances.

“Calling it ‘Augmented Reality’ doesn’t do it justice” says Jeffrey Ventrella, founder and chief inventor of Wiggle Planet, referring to the much-talked-about technology that displays virtual images over real scenes when viewed through the camera of a smartphone or tablet.

For a sneak peak at Wiglets doing their Wiglet-thing, test drive a Wiglet right now on an Apple mobile device. Go to: Peanut Boy and the Hole of Danger! Be sure to pull out a dollar bill.

“This technology has been brewing for decades. Using picture books to bring these characters to life has taken the project to a whole new level of interactivity.” Peck Peck’s Journey is now the focus of a campaign serving as the launch for a variety of Wiggle Planet literary and merchandise app-based properties which showcase Ventrella’s original style of character animation. Backers will be first to get their hands on a Wiglet…if they can keep her there. But if not, they’ll still enjoy the story.

But what exactly is a Wiglet? Says Ventrella, “A Wiglet is a self-animated character – it is created purely out of software. Wiglets have a life of their own. And they breed and evolve. Our Kickstarter campaign will show off how Wiglets will create new levels of interaction and inspiration.”

WigglePlanet is a California limited liability company which develops self-animated characters which come alive through a series of original literary properties, games, and merchandise.
